I am on telus currently, if I unlocked my phone would I have to have a sim from telus to keep using it as it is now?

also I watched a you tube video that said once a tour is unlocked you have to set it to 2g or something. just curious as I am thinking of changing companies and do not wish to purchase a new phone at this time. Thinking that new torch might be a good option in a yr or so.

Do you use a SIM now? the 9830 is both CDMA and GSM. You can unlock the GSM portion to use with any GSM carrier. You would need a SIM from that carrier and it will only operate at EDGE (2G) speeds since the device does not have the 3G GSM frequencies.

If you are using it now on Telus as a CDMA device with no SIM, then unlock has no effect - can't unlock a CDMA device AFAIK.
