Not sure if there's a difference with the 9700 being on OS 5.0, but I just got BB Maps working on my 8900 simply by going to mobile.blackberry.com and downloading BB Maps from there.

I was prompted to install was lbs_ribbon, then the Maps Icon popped up in my home folder!

Default Excellent Resource That Helped Me OUt

I was stumped and tried a variety of ways... This one had helped me out tremendously by going to the direct link and bypassing AT&T although it was before I got to this page.

I followed the instructions . I down-loaded with Desktop manager Ver. 5.01 updated to 4.6.0.304 , platform 4.0.0247 I down -loaded the Blackberry Maps 4.6.0 and the Blackberry Applications also the Ip- something at the bottom of the list.
I did not change the themes at all. The Icon was there after downloading. I turned off Bold and turned it on again a few times, The icon still there. Ok so far.

Now the Test

Went outside and received a lock with just the GPS by itself 5 Satellites in less than 30 seconds. Very fast for a phone GPS.

I set the BB-Maps for GPS only.
Now I started up the BlackBerry Maps and it showed the entire U.S first in about 20 seconds. Then selected start navigation from the menu the bb maps. The BlackBerry Maps received and fixed my location within a matter seconds. Itxxx8217;s right on the money with the satellitesxxx8217; fix location in GPS mode Nice .

I tested it with Poynt found a movie theater and did a route from my fix location. BB Maps did a great job in routing the map. Took about 10- 15 seconds. I know it's good route because this is the way I would travel to that specific theater also.

I turned off the unit and started it up again. Icon was still there. I did this few more time with shutting off the bold and turning back on again. No problems.
The thing is I did not change themes. Itxxx8217;s the same ATT theme. BB maps works fine. though I still might change themes , I dont like the ATT themes that much.

Thanks for the instructions on downloading.

I don't see Maps anywhere on mobile.blackberry.com. I am using 5.0 beta, Bold 9000.

If I use blackberry.com on my pc and search the maps site itself, and go to it directly on bb, it says incompatible hardware.

How can I install lbs_ribbon manually?

This totally works - I don't know if you have to do the other thing first, where you use CrackUtil, because I have done that in the past, but I am so glad I found this - I have the icon back now. Yay!

I got it to work by doing this...tried everything. But whom ever said to go to mobile(dot)blackberry(dot)com was right. (not letting post link, so instead of "." i wrote (dot).

Exact address:
mobileapps(dot)blackberry(dot)com/devicesoftware/entry.do?code=maps_sbi

It installed the icon and i am good to go.

I have a BB Bold 9000 running OS 5.0.0.411

I am unfamiliar with the 9000 series. Can Jlcmdr be used on these?

I too went to mobile.blackberry.com and under What's New found the link for Download Blackberry Maps and installed it. The icon showed up in Main folder and it works just fine.

I gave this another shot, got as far as "reboot the device to complete the install" and after the reboot still can't find BBMaps in Main, Downloads, or Applications. I can't figure out why this is so hard for me and easy for almost everyone else.

From 'Applications', is Blackberry Maps listed as an app? If so, the rest should help:

From the BB internet browser, go to the mobile.blackberry.com page. You should find a link for downloading Maps there. Once you click thru, the download should be of a 'lbs_ribbon' v. 09 file which will allow the Maps app to function. If after completing the install and rebooting you still don't have the Maps icon on your today screen, I'd talk to your BES admin if I were you. They may have done something, similar to AT&T, to disallow its use.

Hope that helps.

Have you tried loading Maps via Desktop Manager? If you go that route, don't try and open the app after installing it, but do verify that it's lasted in your Applications list. Then go thru the step of installing lbs_ribbon from my prior post. You should have the Maps icon on your home screen at that point and can finally use the app.

This might solve the problem if I can figure out how to do it on a MAC. I use DM very rarely. Thanks.

Default BB Maps issue for me...

I upgraded my Bold 9000 to OS 5.0.464 and installed Blackberry Maps (lbs_ribbon) from the mobile(dot)blackberry(dot)com address in the browser and followed the installation instructions. I verified the icon was present in the home screen. Even tried it out, locking onto the GPS satellites without a hitch. A few minutes later the icon disappeared. I did the "Show All" on the home menu and no icon. I went to the applications folder. Not there. I checked the download folder. Not there either. I changed the theme from the default to the Zen theme, still no icon. It is listed on the Settings->Applications menu under "Add-On" but nothing. I did the battery pull a couple of times, still no icon anywhere. As a test, I downloaded and installed Google Maps and it is working as well. It placed the icon in the download folder by default, but I moved it. It has been 24 hours and the Google Maps icon is still present, but not the BB Maps. Strange. I performed the JL_Commander wipe and reinstalled, but same thing happens.

Anyone have some insight? I sure would like to keep playing with the BB Maps.

Thanks in advance,
Don

Five days ago I wrote in this forum that BB Maps was working on my Bold 9000.

Yesterday my Bold had a fatal software accident. Solution was to update the OS to the latest official AT&T version, 4.6.0.304. After this upgrade, downloaded the BB Maps from the BB site, which downloaded a program called lbs_ribbon, exactly as the last time.

I see in my list of installed applications lbs_ribbon, whatever that is, but no BB Maps installed. Neither do I find an icon.

In Poynt, when I opt for BB Maps as the default program, Poynt tells me that it is not installed.

Ah, was too good to last.
