Default Messengers Phone ID

Maybe someone can clear the air on a dicussion beween friends... when you use the messgers on BB Curve 8320, whether the ones preloaded (AIM,Yahoo, etc) or JiveTalk... is there anyway to know the sender's phone ID? I guess our question is, if someone sends me an instant message to my phone, can I find out their number? Also, we want to know can you block your number and by doing so does it also block your number on messengers?

Some say no, some say yes. Can someone clear the air on the discussion, we have a dinner on the line.

I would say no. You are not using the phone, but data, and logging into the specific clients servers (Google, AOL, etc)

I concur. the person on the other end may not even be on a phone - they could be sitting in a couch with their laptop.

Ok the yay say-ers want more clarification... here is the scenario... I send my friend a message to her phone using AOL on Jivetalk, I send the message to her phone as a text, using her screen name as +1her phone #. We want to know if I block my number can she still find out what telephone number the instant message is coming from? Because technically if you block your # via phone they can't find out, most of the time carriers can't even find out.

Maybe that will be more technical and better to understand.
