Angry Content Protection Monster

Please Login to Remove!

All I need to pick your brains.. We have 2 Blackberry tours out of our compliment of 1440 blackberry's that with Content Protection enabled and our security policy set have issues.

Here is what happens;
User tries to unlock the device. Device seems to unlock, all emails, calendar, everything excluding contacts say content protected.

Lock button doesnt work, quick pull app doesnt work, with RIMS support, we have changed the following:
1) Increase Memory Cleaner setting to at least 60 minutes
2) Disable Content Protection (this would prevent scrubbing on the handheld)
3) Wipe device (with no previous data restored onto it prior to the activation)
4) Ensure that Content protection is "Off" and Security Timeout to 60mins (max)
5) Enterprise Activate the BlackBerry device, then turn "On" Content protection allow the device to complete encryption let the device lock.

Content Protection monster occurred again.

Next step taken:
Upgrade to New Verizon OS released 11/19
The new version of software: Java Apps: 4.7.1.61, Platform: 4.1.0.81. After it is reloaded, follow the previous steps again to complete the activation:

1) Increase Memory Cleaner setting to at least 60 minutes
2) Disable Content Protection (this would prevent scrubbing on the handheld)
3) Wipe device (with no previous data restored onto it prior to the activation)
4) Ensure that Content protection is "Off" and Security Timeout to 60mins (max)
5) Enterprise Activate the BlackBerry device, then turn "On" Content protection allow the device to complete encryption let the device lock.

Dont know if it will work or not. Now I have another user reporting the same issue, Sprint as the carrier. He updated his OS on 11/17 to the new #PVer: 4.1.0.70 #AVer: 4.7.1.57. He is having the same issue.

Anyone else having this? Do you have a fix? From the sounds of Tier 2 support there are only a few in the whole world having this issue. Lucky us..

Just want to try to nip this in the bud before we get a huge influx of new Tours to set up.

Thanks!!

An update just heard back from RIM support on the Sprint Tour...
you can go ahead and try the same steps with the Sprint 9630:

1) Increase Memory Cleaner setting to at least 60 minutes
2) Disable Content Protection (this would prevent scrubbing on the handheld)
3) Wipe device (with no previous data restored onto it prior to the activation)
4) Ensure that Content protection is "Off" and Security Timeout to 60mins (max)
5) Enterprise Activate the BlackBerry device, then turn "On" Content protection allow the device to complete encryption let the device lock.

Right now the latest software available from Sprint is 4.7.1.57. You can contact them to find out when a new version should be released to upload this on the Sprint BlackBerry.

WTH?? I know I am not crazy with this, but cmon.. we have got to have a fix for this...

A couple of my users had the same issue, both of their Tours are running 4.7.1.57. No reoccurrences reported after they performed a hard reset. None of my Tour users on either 4.7.1.40 or 4.7.1.61 have reported the problem yet, knock on wood.

A but in the OS maybe.

What line of work are you in that requires content protection turned on?

Surely enforcing a Password would be good enough.

SteveO, never underestimate self-righteous, self-important IT departments.

Yeah, what he said, because self-righteousness and self-importance are the only reasons for enabling CP. Yeah.

Can't speak for the OP, but I'm not concerned after seeing the problem on 2 handhelds out of 111 I have with CP enabled, and not yet having seen it reoccur after a hard reset. Other than that, CP's been so transparent the users don't even know it's on. Maybe by the time the problem has a chance to rear it's ugly head again, we'll have an official release of device software 5.0 for the Tour and they'll have re-labeled the 'Strong-Stronger-Strongest' options for CP to 'Self Righteous - Self Important - Self Righteous AND Self Important' to clarify the reasons for enabling the option. Yeah, that's the ticket.
