Default Question about updates

Please Login to Remove!

A week ago, I got a message from ATT saying there was "an important update" that they recommended I install. Their message indicated what I believe was an update version listed as 6.4.0.223.

I believe this is the update I got from these boards a few months back and installed on my and my wife's Torch 9800's. I also believe I then posted several comments about how this update cut my battery life to about one third of what it used to be in addition to causing several components that I use frequently to fail. So I reversed the update and went back to what was originally installed on my phone when I bought it last Novenber. My wife's torch still has the update I installed a couple months ago that I got here and she says she has not experienced the battery problem I did or a failure of the apps she likes to use. So, she didn't get this message from ATT.

Now, I see the boards listing a possible update listed as 7.0... and may be well ahead of what ATT is actually suggesting what I do.

My question... I loved my phone and how it worked when I bought it. I hated my phone after that update. After I reverted back to the original software, I once again, love my phone. So, is it feasable to just ignore all the updates until I buy a new phone which we usually do about every three years? I am a believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and I have to wonder if these updates are really that necessary. The phone does everything I want it to do. I like it just the way it is. Plus, I have to wonder if they sinced fixed the problems I experienced with that 6.4.0.233 update that I tried several months back? ATT sent the message in bold red font as to indicate its importance but I'm still not convinced.

Yes. You can ignore them. I generally recommend that if the device works as you want and need, then it is not broken and doesn't need to be fixed with an OS update.

The board is full of bad experiences when doing a minor OS upgrade.

Default Re: Question about updates

First off, there will never be an OS 7 for the 9800. So don't worry about that. People seem to ask over and over about it, even though RIM officially announced months ago at BlackBerry World that no existing OS 6 device will get OS 7.

The message you got from AT&T is one that a lot of Torch users got, myself included. AT&T has actually had the version they mention available since the end of August. Who ever wrote that message was about a month and a half late. And it had a typo in the platform version it listed. It's 6.6.0.223, not 6.4.0.223.

Also, when discussing OS version numbers, we typically go by the Application version. In this case - 6.0.0.600, or just "Build .600". Although, the most recent update to the Desktop Manager indicates OS versions by Package numbers now, which just adds to the confusion. In this case - 6.0.0.2647. All three sets of version numbers do refer to the same release.

I had build .600 on my Torch as a leaked OS for a month before AT&T finally went official with it. Ran it for a good 3 months without any problems until build .666 was leaked a couple weeks ago.

Can't way that I noticed any affect that any OS build I try has on the battery. Drainage has always been pretty consistent within a few days of loading any new OS.
