Cool BBM on 7100g?

Please Login to Remove!

I just picked up an old 7100g "just for fun". It'll do email and web, but BBM doesn't seem to be a part of the description anywhere.

I was looking around and I found this post that talks about installing BBM on a 7290 using some BBSAK thing.

My questions is: is there BBM on the 7100g and, if not, is there any hacky way to do it. I don't mind hacky stuff so long as it doesn't involve soldering!

FYI I bought it for INR Rs. 2,000, which is around $44, which is really cheap according to Indian standards!

I guess not.

Oh, well, $44 for email and crappy web is better than a $99 peek, at least!

You should be able to use BB messenger just fine. Try updating the OS on the device to the latest offering. Originally Cingular released that model and didn't support BBM for BIS users, but that was in 2005.

Latest OS for 7100g is 4.1.0.377 and probably available from a carrier's support section.

It's very old and very slow. GPRS speeds for data (that's 30-40k - dial up).
BBM should work, but a VERY old version.

@NJBlackBerry - I'm from India. GPRS speeds are "normal" for us!

Can someone help me find this old version of BBM that I can download and install via the Desktop Manager?

Not sure if you can get it via DM; it is available from mobile.blackberry.com - if you don't have a BlackBerry Data Plan it won't work anyway.

I don't have a BB plan yet, but I'll get it if I can get it to work with this thing. I don't want it just for email - my iPhone gets email and I'm not so reliant on email, so it works okay for me.

It seems BBM is (was?) downloadable OTA on 4.1 and lower OS devices, but I guess I'll only know this after I get the BB plan. Before I do that, I just wanted to get the cod/alx/jar whatever and see if the icon shows up and THEN opt for the BB plan...

It won't work that way. Until you get the service books from a BlackBerry data plan you won't get the icon. First things first.

Yep. So I jumped in and took a BB plan. Got all the icons and then I was able to download an old BBM 1.x for 4.1. It works superbly.

Also, I got a cheap BlackBerry 8100 for Rs. 3,600 ($80). Cheap by indian standards! This one is kick ass! I had reviewed it back in the day... http://tech2.in.com/india/reviews/sm...rl-8100/2797/4

I just downloaded it from the BlackBerry website and it automatically handed out the old version because my device wouldn't support a higher version.
