You have enabled "multi tap" mode on the BB.

Start an e-mail.
Press and hold the */Sym key.

The ABC will go away

There are ways to erroneously switch into multi-tap mode. And sometimes you can accidentlly change your phone settings so that multi-tap is the default typing method.

To get it back to SureType as the default mode, if it got switched:

Press trackball on the <Options> icon [the wrench graphic]

scroll to <language> press trackball

press trackball on <input language>

scroll and highlight <English(United States)>, press trackball

Press escape/return key [key to right of trackball with arrow on it]

Scroll to <save>

Press trackball to save setting.

I just restart my phone when that happens. I thought it was just a bug.

yeah, use the shortcut someone posted earlier. get into a screen where you can type and just hold the * button to get out of the multi-tap mode. if you look around on this site someone posted a link to really good write-up of shortcuts for the pearl that comes in handy.

My post addresses steps to take when at times the phone switches to multi-tap as the default mode. That has happened to me and others. Don't know why it does that.

So rather than always having to hit the SYM key to get back to SureType, one can go into the menus and switch the default mode back.

If one accidentally switches to multi-tap when typing, then yes, simply pressing and holding down the <sym> key gets you switched back to SureType.

I get the ABC every time I use password keeper. It is pretty annoying. I haven't found any method for getting rid of it faster than going to compose an e-mail and holding down * as was already posted.
