Smile Explain differences in software

Please Login to Remove!

I am having trouble connecting my BB3320 to my XP PC.

The computer does not detect it and neither does the Blackberry Dev Manager.

I decided to reinstall all my software.

I went to T-mobile and saw the following:

Handheld Software (v 4.5.0.81)
Handheld Software Installation Instructions
Desktop Manager Software (v 4.6.0.14) English with Media Manager
Desktop Manager Software (v 4.6.0.14) English without Media Manager
Desktop Manager Software (v 4.6.0.14) Multi-Language with Media Manager
Desktop Manager Installation Instructions

My first question is what is the difference between:

Handheld Software

And

Desktop Manager Software (v 4.6.0.14)

I have searched other threads and have found references to "USB drivers". Is this included in the "Desktop Manager Software" package? T-mobile does not reference this driver and I have gotten the impression XP failure to even detect the device in Windows device manager (i.e. I don't get any evidence that the BB is recognized by the PC) may mean that the BB XP USB drivers were never installed. Yet T-mobile never references this point in their instructions.

I decided that I wanted to install the Desktop Manager Software v 4.6.

Can someone clarify what this assortment of drivers and software is?

What is absolutely necessary to connect the BB and get it "seen" by the PC and the BB device manager.

Desktop Manager software is the program that gets installed on your PC
Handheld software is what gets installed on your BlackBerry(which gets installed on your PC first then installed to you device through Desktop Manager)

You want the newest version of both
Unsupported Browser
go here and put in your 10 digit phone number and get the newest of each, make sure the newest version of desktop manager is installed first then have it closed and install the latest device software.

then plug in, if you stil dont see your device, check connections at the top right. make sure its set to USB.

if still nothing, go to c:\program files\blackberry\appload and open loader.exe and try to update that way

This explains the Desktop Manager:

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Desktop Software - BlackBerry Software at BlackBerry.com

You need it installed on your PC to be able to sync calendar, tasks, contacts with Outlook, and to create backups of your device.

The device software is the operating system for the BlackBerry handheld.

If you want to upgrade your device OS or be able to install programs that do not have over the air (OTA) download/installation available, you need the device OS installed to your PC also.

You don't necessarily need Media Manager/Roxio. You can drag and drop files from your PC to your device using Windows Explorer. Desktop Manager installs the drivers needed for the PC to recognize the device, but there is a separate download just for the drivers.
