Why you see an IP of the location where your BES is intalled while you are on wifi router at home.

While using WiFi & mobile network off, I checked my IP using the website (whatismyip.com) I figured out that my IP belonged to the location of BES irrespective of which browser I was using. I was expecting to see IP of my internet service provider at home.

That's not the IP of your BlackBerry, but the IP address of your BES.
Your BlackBerry connects to the internet via your BES, that's why you're going to see that IP if you goto one of those sites because it's not your BlackBerry asking for it's IP address, but your BES.
So, Blackberry---->Internet---->BES---->Corp network and internet connection

If you want the IP address given to your phone by the wifi router it's connected to, the I believe if you navigate to Options>Status, it will show there, if not, Options>Mobile Network>Menu there is an option in there for wifi diagnostics.

When you connect to your wifi, all data goes through your BES via the internet.

As the data is not going through your mobile network, then you willl not get charged by your mobile providor for the data used at this time.

skyman just explained this to you. It doesn't matter how your BB is connected, you are browsing from it through the BES to the internet. Hence when you do an IP address check from the BB browser you are always going to report as the BES, as the BES is doing the browsing, not the BB.

I was told that if I turn mobile network off and use wifi I should see IP of my home internet service provider not the BES. Is this true?????? I tried but I still see my corporate IP no matter I how I connect to internet.

In a nut shell I just want to make sure that while browsing through wifi, I should not get charged for data.

You were told wrong my friend, read skyman's reply again. We wouldn't all say it if it wasn't true .

If you use the "Hotspot" browser, that uses your WIFI connection. Just because you enabled WIFI and clicked on the Browser doesn't mean your using the WIFI connection.


There's 3 browsers. There's a WAP browser, there's an MDS browser and there's the Hotspot browser.

The MDS browser, by default will browse through your BES. The WAP browser bypasses the BES and goes directly to the webs.. the Hotspot browser goes through WIFI if it's enabled and your carrier hasn't removed it.

The browsers that show vary by carrier.. some carriers will push out a service book to remove the icon..

When on a BES ALL browser data will go through the MDS proxy. You will ALWAYS see your BES IP. ALWAYS.

I am on a BES. I ALWAYS see my BES IP address, regardless of what browser I'm using. ALL data goes through the BES. Thats the whole point of the BES.

If you're on BIS only then you will ALWAYS see the BIS IP address, even if on the Hotspot Browser.

When I'm at home and have WiFi enabled and use the change my browser to Hotspot, I see my home IP address when I look at my web server logs, when at the office, I see our NAT'd public IP address of the BES.

I get my BES IP no matter what browser I set to default. There's nothing I can do to get another IP to show up when I go to whatismyip.com.

With WiFi connected. Methodology: create a bookmark to www.whatismyip.com; edit the book mark to select different browsers; load the bookmark and refresh.

Internet Browser: the IP of the BIS
Hotspot Browser: the IP of my home (because I'm there)
Blackberry Browser: the IP of my office

I manage the BES and have not restricted any browsing or connections, though IIRC when browsing is restricted, the restricted browser is not available on the blackberry.

My company uses websense. When I use the MDS browser, I get blocked pages as if I was browsing from inside the office on a computer.

When I use the WAP(MEdia Net) or Hotspot browser, I dont get any blocks. If the MDS is acting as a proxy and ALL data is going through the BES, explain how I am not getting blocked? When you browse using the MDS browser, your connection is being authed as your "blackberry" account through Websense and denied if the account isn't on the allowed list.

I also get my home IP when I'm on WIFI browsing using the Hotspot browser.

Great discussion...I'm eager to see someone articulate a definitive answer.

I can attest that I, too, will be blocked by Websense if browsing via MDS but, say, if I use the Bolt Browser, my IP (based on whatismyip.com) is from MY isp, not my company's, and I won't be blocked by Websense.

WiFi on, Mobile off (as was asked by shezi) -

Internet Browser = IP address of RIM UK (don't ask me but I guess they pick it up as the mobile network isn't there anymore)
Hotspot Browser = IP address of Home (coz I'm here)
BlackBerry Browser = IP address of BES (as expected, and our point to the OP).

Apart from RIM taking my internet traffic for me, that's as expected.

And just to add some finality:

BES Admins can block non-MDS browsing options. So if you CAN'T get it to work as per post above, your BES admin is DENYING you. And there is no way round this. So give up trying. K?
