I found this site on HowardForums, so I joined up. I'm the new owner of a 7280 through ATTWS. So far so good, but now a bit of buyers remorse - is the 7780 that much better?

While the 7780 has a much better screen for backlit indoor use, there are some advantages of the 7280 over the 7780:

- Longer battery life due to less bright backlight
- More readable screen outdoors
- Slightly smaller size is preferred by some people

Personally, I am looking forward to the 7290 coming this October, since it has double the RAM (32megs) and has BlueTooth, and is likely usable as an external modem with a laptop.

The 7280 is fine, the 7780 is not much better at all, you get some benefits like a bigger screen and a better backlight, but you get the drawbacks of a bigger device, worse battery life and for some odd rerason a non-standard usb connector.

If you look on any forum, you will see people that prefer one or the other, neither is a bad device so theres no need for any buyers remorse about buying one or the other.

Obviously, you could get a bit annnoyed when the 7290 shows up in about a month, but your 7280 will still be a good device as long as you don't intend leaving north america too often anyway.

Mark, do you know if there will be a version of the 7290 for Nextel?

The 7510 is a relatively new device for the Nextel network, so I wouldn't expect to see anything until summer next year for the iDEN devices. (Note: this is speculation on my part based on the development time between the 6510 and the 7510)

I just went from a 7280 to a 7780 feeling like I was missing something. Functionally, they are the same device. You can't do more with the 7780 that you can do with the 7280. Although I did hear that the RF was better with the 7780, I have not been able to substantiate that with my own experience.

My motivation was that I got an amazing offer for the 7780 that I couldn't refuse. Otherwise, I'd still be using the 7280.
