Download and install JL_cmder.
Use the 'Reset to Factory' option in it.

What if you are running Mac OS X? Just curious. I mean I could always go to the Dark Side and use the Wife's PC & use it for that then reintroduce it to the Mac.

You can do a wipe from the device, but it won't necessarily reset the device to factory settings.
Options > Security Options > General Settings > click menu button > Wipe Handheld

If there's an IT Policy on the device, it will remain there.
A wipe also won't remove RIM-signed applications.

Hi - sorry to bother you but you obviously know your way around the phones!
Have same problem - need to wipe a damaged phone that is going back to orange.

Thankfully I managed to save the data and transfer it to the new phone via desk manager but now I need to wipe it and the screen is blank so I would probably have to do it from the computer - any ideas please.......thanks in advance for your help.

red light blinking
try hard reset(pull battery out then put back in)

If that doesn't work software reload

Sometimes the BlackBerry smartphone is not correctly detected by BlackBerry Desktop Manager and thus it is not able to detect the personal identification number (PIN) when going through a standard reload of the BlackBerry Device Software through the application loader tool.

Resolution
The following steps outline how to run the application loader tool when the BlackBerry smartphone is not recognized by BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.2 and 4.3:

Install the latest BlackBerry Desktop Software Device Software.
Disconnect the BlackBerry smartphone from the computer.
Remove the battery from the BlackBerry smartphone.
Reconnect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Application Loader.
In the Application Loader Wizard window, click Next.
In the Device Application Selection window, click Next.
Click Finish.
At the step Wait for device initialization, insert the battery into the BlackBerry smartphone.
The following steps outline how to run the application loader tool when the BlackBerry smartphone is not recognized by BlackBerry Desktop Manager version 4.5 to 5.0:

Install the latest BlackBerry Desktop Software and BlackBerry Device Software.
Disconnect the BlackBerry smartphone from the computer.
Remove the battery from the BlackBerry smartphone.
Reconnect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, click Application Loader.
Click on Start under Update Software.
In the Available Updates window, click Next.
Click Finish.
At the step Wait for device initialization, insert the battery into the BlackBerry smartphone.
