starting to work my way through user's guide

when our it people moved my stuff from 8820 to 9000, i thought my (two) speed dial numbers (A and B) would carry over. A is (or was) my wife and B is my work voice mail number.

well, every time i tried A this afternoon, instead of my wife's number ringing, my bold's keyboard locked up. i have searched and searched and found no way to change A from some new "Lock System" default to the first of my speed dial numbers. i wonder what brilliant person thought that up / argh

Do you have Dial from Home Screen set to "yes?" It shouldn't matter but it's worth a try.

Look in Phone >Options >General Options.

john clark, in response to your message, i took a look and the answer / setting is "Yes"

i also see another brainlessly locked letter in the speed dial list:

"W" Voice Mail [tendigitno.]

(that's no use because "1" is what i use to call at&t voice mail instead!)

I just noticed this the other day. I've used the "A" and the "Q" for Speed Dial Numbers for the last couple years and now I got to change it to something else.

Still looking for a way to change this. I would like my Speed Dial Keys back.

1. Open your phone app by pressing the Green phone icon
2. Hit the blackberry button and select "View Speed Dial list" form the context menu.

You will see that A is assigned to Lock Keyboard. Even though there are no menu option to change it or remove it, if you hit enter you should be brought to the contacts where you can select someone from your contacts. This should do the trick for you.

Why they hid the feature that you have to press enter to chose a user. Now the question I have is how do I set mine back to lock keyboard.

What is funny is I ended up losing my A is for lock keyboard assignment :( Three days later it came back?? I am wondering if it will do the same to you? I did a couple of software installs through DM since the loss of that assignment key but I'm not sure how it got back to being assigned to Lock keyboard, but happy it is hope it keeps assigned for you... Glad I could help

i changed mine to what i wanted instead a day or so ago when i saw your helpful post. (and thx again.) so far my replacement choices have stuck but i'll report later if and when i may see later that big brother has changed them back!

I am trying to follow your suggestion to change the Q and A speed dial buttons...this may be stupid but can you please tell me where the "enter" button is?

If by "enter" you mean the rollerball...when I hit that I only get two options, Lock system and Full menu (which doesnt take me to my phone book)

the "enter" key is on the right, below the "del" key

I also started reading this thread as a skeptic, thinking this was just some variation of the "dial from home screen" scenario.

This has opened my eyes to the fact that there seem to be some macros programmed into the speed dial keys. I see that the Q shortcut to swap between normal and vibrate profiles is buried in here, too.

This makes me wonder if there might be a solution to a problem I've been having that I'd like to open up to any suggestions...

Here's the scenario: I live in Australia, and use a calling card to make international calls. The calling card requires me to dial a toll-free number, wait for some time, enter my calling card code, and then I'm supposed to dial the phone number of the person I want to call.

Since I use this calling card to dial many different people, I can't program in the entire sequence, or else I'd have to program the entire calling card process + the individual phone numbers for each person I want to call.

What I'd really like is a feature sort of like how "WAIT" works. When I program a "wait" into a phone number, a menu pops up waiting for me to press a key. Wouldn't it be cool if I could program in a "lookup" so that I was presented with my address book and given a chance to select another number to dial.

Any thoughts on how to accomplish something like this? Hope my goal is comprehensible...

I would start your own thread for this as this is off topic from this thread. But I see what you are asking for and it most likely would be a custom 3rd party application that you are looking for. It is really hard to change the default behavior of system applications like the phone, they are self contained Java applications that you can't just jam code under line 58 and insert your own code. If RIM ever becomes open source then you could reprogram their code to do what you want and build on their code.
