Default 8800 & manual network selection

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, I am using an 8800c. I have been trying all weekend to figure out how to manually select a network while travelling abroad. After spending many hours searching for the answer, I gave up and am finally posting the question here in the forums.

So, as per other messages, I'm going into options -> Mobile Network. From there, supposedley there is an option to set the network selection mode from Auto to Manual, but on my device I don't see this. All I see are two options: Data Services, "on" or "off", and then below that, "Mobile Network: " shows me the current network that has been automatically selected for me. I see nothing, no setting that would allow a manual network selection.

Help!

Have you pulled your battery?

Yes, I have pulled the battery many times, it doesn't change the fact that I don't see a menu option to manually select the network.

at&t blocks this capability domestically, but it should work whilst roaming internationally.

I am actually travelling at this very moment in Mexico, where there are different options for GSM networks, and I still do not have the option to manually select.

Is there a way to "unlock" this functionality or more accurately, add this functionality back in to my at&t 8800?

No. This functionality is controlled by the SIM card.

Can I get a different SIM card and still use AT&T?

Sorry if my questions are too ignorant/newbie. I really did search for the answers on these questions and have not been able to find them.

Unfortunately no... Cingular cards have blocked this functionality for the past few years, and consequently, the new at&t cards block it as well. Older at&t Blue cards did not block this feature, but they have been known not to work in new devices.

My honest opinion would be that you should call at&t and see if they will enable that for you. Tell them that you are out of the country and stuck on a network with poor service.

You really should be able to manually select the network when traveling. It's possible that you might have to have something provisioned for this. I'd also suggest calling at&t.
