It seems like a waste of power to have the clock showing while the phone is charging is there any way of making the screen turn off?

I usually hit the escape button. If an email or call comes in during the charging period, the clock will come back on.

find the clock application
enter it
click menu - options
change the "WHEN CHARGING:" option
to DO NOTHING

then it wont show the clock!
