notification for voicemail

Have anyone experience this problem?
I have always lock my phone when not in use. So, when my phone is locked, I dont get notification alert for Voicemail until I unlock my phone. Which means, if I dont unlock my phone, I will not know that I have voicemail waiting for me EVER!
I am using OS .593
I noticed there is no alert setting for voicemail anymore, it treats all voicemail as SMS. But I would get notification for SMS when my phone is locked. this is weird, isnt it?
