Default OS: 9500 5.0.0.1413/5.0.0.841 (EFIGS_Dutch)

Please Login to Remove!

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1413 (All Languages)

Package Version: 5.0.0.1413
Consisting of:

* Applications: 5.0.0.841
* Software Platform: 4.2.0.214
* File name: 9500_omadrmEFIGS_Dutch_PBr5.0.0_rel1413_PL4.2.0.38 0_A5.0.0.841.exe
* File size: 116MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download OS file here: http://support.vodafone.de/publicfil...A5.0.0.841.exe

Instructions for installing either version on ANY carrier's 9500:

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

I am not confident altering/deleting files. Shouldn't an update come through automatically when plugged into the BB Desktop?

I am current on: v5.0.0.497, platform 4.2.0220 using 9520 Storm 2

JS,
Any feedback yet on the benefits of the update vs. the previous standard version?

I recently tried a hybrid OS version from driphter.com. It was a lot more responsive (faster loading web pages, more accurate keyboard response) but had some flaws, e.g., loss of voice dial capability, degradation of Google Maps to half screen from full screen.

I recently got a notice from driphter that there is a new hybrid available. I prefer to use the currently available update first before messing with another hybrid in the hope that it will have some of the improved responsiveness I found in the hybrid.

Thanks for your efforts in keeping us so well informed!

alas this OS has been only useful in giving me problems, from the constant rebooting on its own to the loss of memory and loss of typing ability in BBM Groups

i will downgrade to the previous OS

When your carrier decides to offer the upgrade.

And, I would NEVER update via your automatic method... too much risk of losing data from a botched upgrade. The manual method works for best for me, just as described above.

I haven't tried this OS yet, my wife has the 9500 and I haven't gotten her hands off of it long enough to upgrade it.

That is a known issue for ALL of the more recent Storm device OS releases.
The ONLY solution is to use the Beta Messenger application available in BlackBerry BetaZone.

Have followed the instructions to update any carriers version but the version doesn't show in the list of available upgrades in the Ver 6.0 Desktop Software. Any pointers?

Default Unable to Install Update

Hi there,

I am running a Mac (MacBook Pro) with Parallels (Virtual PC) and have tried to update my Storm (5200) software via Blackberry Desktop on both the PC and on the Mac OS with no success. I have also manually downloaded the file as specified at the start of this thread and followed the instructions listed.

Each time, when I get to section labelled: Connect to the device ROM
I get an error that reads: The Application Loader could not connect to your BlackBerry device. Try the following actions:
1. Disconnect device and wait for 10 seconds
2. Turn off the Power Management settings on your computer from:
a. Control Panel > System
b. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager
c. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controls
d. Right-click on USB Root Hub and Select Properties
e. Go to the Power Management tab
f. Select Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and click OK
3. Connect your device directly to a USB port on your computer. Do not use an intermediary device, including:
a. USB hub
b. USB extension cable
c. Laptop docking station
d. USP port in front of the computer
4. Click Retry

I have done 1., 2., but don't know what I can do with 3. because I am connecting my BB directly to the USB on the side of the laptop.

Can anyone please help me? I don't know what else to do.

Thank you very much.
Daniel

When I try loader.exe, it says that the desktop software does not have the desktop software for the device that I have connected. I'm using Windows 7. I deleted vendor.xml, but I do not know what you mean by "click compatability files."

Default Bundle 1413

JS:

I believe in this bundle, the Software Platform is actually the 4.2.0.380 and not the 4.2.0.214.

I have installed it a few weeks ago, dont remember where from. Works well, much less memory leaks, but messages seem to take much longer to open.

Latest BB Msg is very slow (actually this package does not have the latest BB MSG, it must be installed after the upgrade).

Do you think it is exactly the same package or it might have something new?

The one I installed (1413, 500841, 420380) did not have the portuguese language files, I installed these files from an earlier release, this bundle is multilanguage, do you thing it might have portuguese?

I'm still having trouble uploading the latest OS on my Storm. Is there a way to easily reset my BB Storm 5200 to the factory settings so I can upload it from a clean starting point, so to speak?

Thanks,
Daniel

So, not much feedback yet ... anyone?

Is it better to stick by the maxim "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Or upgrade anyway?

Peace to one and all x

Well went ahead and did the upgrade, thought what the hey!

So far, nice and responsive. I like the tweaks to the menus, SMS look is good - tho I've read plenty o comments from folk that don't seem to like the bubble msg approach, I must admit I do.
Overall it has a nice feel to it, system response is good. Not quite a major overhaul but some very nice tweaks in my opinion.

"Select" still seems a pain in the a##e but overall a usable OS.

Seems to work ok for me ?

The one thing I have issue with is this: when using the native media player, the "up/down" hard keys seem to vary between "volume up/down" and "track next/previous".

Anyone else notice this or is it intentional behaviour?

Edit: Ok, searched and have found the answer. My, that's a funny way of going about things ....
