Even though we're drifting off topic, I actually have some very recent insight here. I recently switched from Verizon to Sprint because of the cost. Here is the breakdown of my Verizon plan: $79.99 Core Choice 450 plan (450 peek minutes, unlimted N&W at 9pm, unlimited VZW-to-VZW, unlimited data) plus $19.99 unlimited texting. That's $99.98 per month. You can imagine that bill was not my favorite to open.
Now to Sprint. $39.99 Power Pack 450 (450 peek minutes, unlimited N&W starting at 7pm, unlimited Sprint-to-Sprint) plus $39.99 BlackBerry Unlimited Data Pack (title of it says it all), plus $10.00 Unlimited SMS. That's $89.98.
This of course does not include line discounts. I received 19% on Verizon to bring the base bill down to $79.98 per month. I receive 23% on Sprint to bring the base bill down to $69.28 per month.
Why pay more? I suppose if you have many, many friends on Verizon it would make sense to use your network-to-network minutes that way. Fortunately for me the person I call the most (girlfriend) is on Sprint, so I'm definitely saving on both the price and stress about wondering if I'm about to go over on my minutes with a week to go in the cycle. My bill may not be "a hell of a lot cheaper" than yours, but even before discounts Sprint is the cheaper option right now.
