Hi

I just got my blackberry today over Simobil Vodafone and I have 100MB of data/month included in my subscription, now I also have a wifi at home, so I'd rather use that to receive/send my emails and use my 100MB when I'm not at home.

I already setup my email via blackberry and I've send and received mail, now what I wonder is, I know you can use a HotSpot Browser to access the internet via WiFi, but can you send email via WiFi as well? When I registered my Blackberry I got the following response "Your handheld had been registered with the wireless network", which is confusing me, because I don't know if the phone uses WiFi as a priority over normal GPRS/EDGE, or not? I'd be rather retarded if I used EDGE while sitting at home.

Also if someone could answer me, does the phone constantly check for the new emails and uses my precious KBs? Can I disable that and excess email only when I want?

"wireless network" refers to the cellular network not a WiFi network.

The 8520 is not 3G capable, only EDGE. If you are connected to WiFi, then you should be able to use the web that way and surf a bit faster than if you were on EDGE. But keep in mind there are other factors that will determine your speed: device processor, device memory, mobile vs. regular websites, etc.

As for email, I don't know the answer. Typically, email doesn't use that much data unless you get a lot of attachments and graphics.

Aha thanks, so my guess is that it doesn't uses WiFi to push emails

I can't say for certain if it does or does not. Not sure if there is a real answer for that one.

Yes, the BlackBerry will do this automatically if you have an active WiFi connection on the device.

That message is a general indicator that your BlackBerry has been authenticated on RIM's network. It doesn't really mean that it's using cellular vs. WiFi. If you have an active WiFi connection, then the device will use that over cellular.

No, it doesn't. Mail is only pushed to the handheld when the BIS service finds it in your mailbox. The device never requests a mail delivery.

If the Blackberry can establish a connection to the RIM computers that host the BIS via Wi-Fi, then all your Blackberry data will go by Wi-Fi. The indication to look for is a bright white Wi-Fi logo as opposed to a grey or no logo.

I think penguin covered this, but maybe not explicitly enough.
