Default BES RoundTrip Testing

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I have been trying to figure out how companies such as GSX do roundtrip monitoring without using an actual blackberry.
To be clear, roundtrip testing tries to send an email from the local mail server, through the BES and to the SRP. There needs to be a way to verify that the email has been sent by the BES server, or would have been sent.

The documentation around this type of procedure seems to be mostly non-existent. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Yeah, though I would have thought that some documentation would exist somewhere for them to be able to do it.

Never really thought about how they do it without a device.

BTW - Your name is so awesome, it's obvious.

Why not do something like send a mail to a predefined address, or, to a user with the confirm, delete subject ?

Of course if the bb is offline, there will be a very late answer, which you have to discard, and if the bb is online the time will include the time the device needs for the answer, but for a simple selfmade monitoring that should be enough since the only interesting thing is the difference of todays results and the mean value.

Also there is the bbsrptest.exe, where you can ping or traceroute.

bbsrptest.exe looks like it could be useful, I'll have to check that out more.
I'm not quite clear what you mean by a pre-defined address though. Do you mean an address that is not provisioned on an actual BB? That is precisely what I am after, I just don't know how to do it.

Essentially, if I can confirm it is making it to the system, that is as far as I need to test, the important bit for me is the connection between mail server and the BES.

Thanks for your input

No, you have to use an address which is availible through your BES. I just thought how to implement an own monitoring system. Otherwise you wont get a reply.
However, you could use the blackberry simulator on a PC to create a virtual blackberry which is always online (connected through the desktop software to the BES). That should give you the information if the mailserver (exchange) is connected succesful to the BES, and, that the BES is able to deliver a message to the device.
In case you dont know about the "confirm" message:
send a message with the subject: <confirm> to a BB.
more here:
BlackBerry Message Receipt Confirmation Tool

the bbsrptest will give you the IP address of the SRP server, and make a short check of the connectivity. Dont know if you can use the time, the utility uses for execution as a measure of quality.

So I love this idea and read the blackberry documentation. Unfortunately, I haven't been able get it to work. According to the documentation, you can put <$Confirm,RemoveOnDelivery,SuppressSaveInSentItems > in the subject. It looks like $Confirm is a variable, but it doesn't say what it should be. Do you have any insight on this?

Regarding the software blackberry, I did try that, that was actually the first place I went to, but I wasn't able to get it to enterprise activate. I found directions for it and followed them, but it didn't work for me :( and I haven't had time to mess about with it since.

Its meant like it is written:
put
Code:
<$Confirm,RemoveOnDelivery,SuppressSaveInSentItems>
In the subject.

A simple <confirm> will also do.

Regarding the activation:
Start the simulator and the blackberry desktop
Deactivate all wireless connections in the ui of the simulator, in the simulator in the menu, choose "connect usb", the desktop software should then find a new bb, and will ask you to regererate the encryption key, also it will (?) Should ask you (?) For an outlook profile for this device.
After this, it might take 5 mintes until "activation complete" appears on the bb.

Of course you have to create a user with mailbox in exhange ( send a testmail to the address to for exchange to create the mailbox if you habe exchange 2003 or lower), create an account on the bes for this user, configure outlook for this user on the pc where the simulator runs.
