"Hard reset" frees 3MB of storage space?!
Please Login to Remove!
Using a 7290. Has anyone else encountered this? Handheld has been pretty sluggish lately, even when I don't run anything in the background. Wireless sync is only activated for messages and calendar. Nothing different from usual but just too slow. I deleted old messages and it sped up a bit, but free space was just over 14MB (before deletion was about 13+MB).
I thought I'd just hard-reset for the hell of it to see what gets cleaned up, and to my amazement I got 17MB of free space left now! Is that bad memory management for RIM? How did 3MB get locked away when it wasn't used for anything? I didn't have anything running in the background, and now I still don't!

Hi, how do you carry out a hard reset? The only way I know is pushing a pin against the RESET indicator at the back of the unit. I have a JVM 105 error and need to do a hard reset to the unit.

Mine doesn't have a hard-reset button. I pressed alt-cap-del twice. Same effect when I remove and reinsert the battery. You'll know it's a hard-reset when the device checks its security software on startup.

You guys are talking about two different things. William Lee, you need to reload the operating system and application software on your BlackBerry. Read the sticky threads at the top of the General BlackBerry forum and they explain how to use "Javaloader" to wipe out your BlackBerry (what you are referring to as a hard reset) and reload the OS through Application Loader.
l3stat - you are doing a reboot. The first time you use an application, like phone, it gets loaded. So naturally when you reboot, you have move memory. Just like Windows. And every other Operating System.

NJBlackberry, I am going to try the javaloader.exe method, do you know where I'd download a copy. I have nothing else to lose; short of throwing away the unit - only 2 months old.

NJBlackberry, still no good! Have tried running Javaloader in DOS and under Win run, both unable to flush the device of the OS. The DOS screen just blink and nothing else happened. When running Desk Top manager, the ApplLoader wouldn't recognise any USB ports. Am running out of ideas. Any other approach I could try?
Thanks for the help so far, at least I am learning a few in/outs of the BB.

Make sure you shut down Desktop Manager
Javaloader is a DOS program - forget running it under Windows.
Connect the BB.
Open a DOS prompt; type javaloader -usb wipe
It will find the BB and wipe it out, unless your USB ports are screwed up.

make sure you connect your bb to computer's usb port directly and not through a hub!

NJBlackberry, pleased to report that my USD is talking to the handset and I now have couple of icons on the screen saying they are connected. Also I think the handheld is now wiped clean of its OS -still unsure.
I am unable to find the OS file; with the Application Loader open, then the Application Wizard but it shows no applications that can be loaded. Then using Add selection, there are no file in the RIM\Blackberry directory that has the file tyep: *.alx or *.ali.
I need to locate the OS to allow a reloading to work. Pls help.
FYI my Desk Top SW version is 3.6.2

If the BB is completely wiped out, it will have a funky icon on it with a code "507" - which means no operating system is found.
There is a sticky thread in the General Discussion forum about Version 4.0; it has the locations for every carrier on where to download the latest and greatest handheld OS. Find the right one, download it and execute it.
Then restart Desktop Manager - it should work.
Good luck!

NJBlackberry, my carrier actually is Optus Australia and it is not shown in the list (only Telstra appeared). I am tempted just to use this. I have couple of questions for u if you could help:
Do I just down load the BB HandHeld 7230 ... (TM) file or I should also download the Desk Top SW?
Also what is the difference between the V 4.0 and 3.7 ..... Would the 4.0 work on my set? The original platform of my handset as I recall is 3.7 ....someting. W

7230 code will not work on the 7290. Download the code from T-Mobile or Cingular and it will work. The 4.0 code is the latest. That's what I would use.
If you do not have the latest Desktop Manager SW, I would download that also.

NJBlackberry, my BB is now back in bussiness. Thanks for your help and some very valuable notes from the Forum. In short, i would liek to share the fix with anyone who might encounter the same problem:
Handheld: 7230
Probelm: Screen displayed continues JVM 105 error mssg - corrupted OS. HH not responding to any reset actions, and unable to be connected to USB port.
First action: Do reset using the keys or from reset hole and immediately run DT manger, then Application Loader to initiate USB port. You might need to do this a few times to catch the HH during resetting.
Second action: wipe HH OD using execuable in DOS: javaloader.exe -usb wipe. The response is a 105 error in your HH whjch indicates the HH has no OS.
It has taken me more than 20 hours to solve this problem and I was just about to nuy a new HH.
