It appears that 17 YO New Jersey boy made headlines today by unlocking the iphone! and he says its legal and protected under some "act" from the govt.
He has T-Mobile service on his Iphone. I see alot of people asking questions about unlocking BB. Maybe one of guys can create something and make the news like he did!

Personally, I don't see why one would just pay like the rest of us?
He's posted the step by step on youtube. I know some of you techy's like this sort of thing. I am just passing the info.

I do not condon or encourage this type of behavior though!

You are absolutely right! I am sure they are planning something.
But in his interview he stated something about "Digital Millenium Act"
and it being completely legal BUT we shall see.
I have no idea what that is????

There's at least one free way to unlock. Call your service provider and ask them for the code. Many major carriers will give you the code. Totally legit, and totally free.

Absolutely right - I do it with T-Mobile. However, this only works under certain circumstances with certain carriers.

Actually I think by the rules of the FCC, they have to unlock it at your request and other carriers are suppose to allow you to use another phone as long as it is compatible.

Like Cingular cant make you purchase a Pearl from them if you already own one through T-Mobile and want to get service through Cingular. Something the FCC did to help consumers with money.

Does Cingular have to insure you under that. Probably not. Would probably void everything else. Anyways that is why they are usually willing to give up the code without a fight.

I would imagine that Apple would actually be [secretly] ecstatic that the iPhone is unlocked by a 3rd party. AT&T, on the other hand would not be.

Unlocked iPhones = more iPhone sales.

While I realize there is more to it than just that, it's my first reaction (opposite of most, it seems).

Klotar, you are exactly right! The following day Apple saw a rise in stock! Could it be due to others buying to unlock to use with their providers? Who knows? MSN news speculated that it could be.
I do agree that apple might be happy but why not allow other carriers besidn AT&T to begin with? My guess is to hype it up!

There are so many reasons but the bottom line is MONEY for apple!

Let me rephrase that. I take back the statement about the carriers helping you unlock the cell phones. However, if you have a contract through t-mobile and have been a customer for more than 90 days, they will help you unlock the cell phone. If you have completed your contract through AT&T they will unlock yours. Also if you have a cell phone unlocked already, which you purchased through T-mobile, ebay, or the maker itself, they have to let you activate it through their carrier. They will try to get your money by making you buy one of theirs but you do not have to.

It can be done under the regulations of the FCC. They have to honor your wish if it can be used in that carriers service. This mainly goes for GSM phones.

Sorry for the confusion. I just wanted it known that they have to service you although they might try to tell you the you have to buy their phone.

Yes you are right. Especially with people already knowing how and being able to buy software to unlock the iphone already. It is just common sense that Apple would unlock the phones themselves and sell them through their stores. All about getting themselves more money.

I'd meant to add, but forgot: the unlocking of the iPhone by a 3rd party also means, in addition to what I posted above, means that Apple did not break an exclusivity agreement with AT&T to sell phones to other carriers, or unlocked phones to other distributors (which might be interpreted as Apple being "in competition" with AT&T).

But now that it's been unlocked (but not by Apple nor AT&T or other overseas partner carriers), I see it as good for Apple... although on the surface it wouldn't seem so.

It does make one wonder if it all wasn't part of Steve's Master Plan... ;)

I guess it's all relative because based on what I saw the kid do to the iphone to unlock it I would not spend $500-$600. He had that thing in pieces and it looked a mess! It would not be worth it for me! I'd just buy the darn thing!

The kid came up with a software solution. Earlier hacks by someone else (overseas iirc) were by hardware.

The thing also is, one couldn't buy an unlocked iPhone if they wanted to. But now it'd be possible to either buy one and unlock it yourself, or buy one that'd be unlocked by someone else already.
