Can't get capital EDGE
Please Login to Remove!
Hi all - I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem, as t-mobile's customer service is seriously dropping the ball.
Basically, ever since I turned on my phone after getting off the plane in Los Angeles, my 8100 won't get capital EDGE. I've tried a few things, resetting/pulling the battery, etc., but nothing seems to work.
Has anyone had this problem, or does anyone know what I can do to fix it?
Thanks for your time.

I assume that you have an actual BlackBerry data plan. If so, try dbt's suggestion.

I do have a data plan - should I be registering with the HRT that's already bold? And what should happen - I get a popup saying "registration message sent!" - should I restart, or wait for something else to happen?
Thanks.

Hello, are you normally using your phone in LA or are you just visiting? If this is you normal place to use the phone do you normally have EDGE service? Do others on tmob usually have EDGE in LA...I would assume so but you never know. Are you still getting data with GPRS?? What kind of service are you actually getting right now?

I normally use it in LA, I'm usually in LA, but I go to boston for the summers. I've always had EDGE wherever I've been though, this is the first I've had this issue.
I'm not getting GPRS, just lowercase edge at this point. Thanks for all your time.

I actually had that issue this morning, where it was showing "edge" instead of "EDGE." There was one instance where my BlackBerry showed GSM for about 12 hours (about 3-4 months ago). It eventually just fixed itself. I don't know how long it has been but I would give it at least 24 hours if it hasn't been that long already. You may also try removing the SIM card and replacing it back in.

Thanks - I've tried pulling out the sim card and battery a few times so far. I've also had this happen before but it's lasted less than a day, tops. Currently I haven't had "EDGE" for a week and a half now. Anyone else have other ideas?

I had this problem before at Fort Knox, KY. I on the other hand called t-mobile and they reset my system or did something on there end and fixed the issue.
They were very helpful with me and got me on track. Make sure you talk to the BB reps at T-mobile.

do you remember what they told you? for some reason they aren't able to resolve my problem, and I am talking to the BB/pda specific reps. Thanks for your response.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.8295/1704; en; U; ssr))
T-mo actually gets better reception than AT&T in downtown LA. Except where I live out in the sticks.
But I've been. Having the same problem and I'm on AT&T.

No, sorry I dont remember exactly what they said.
What are they telling you? I can at least give you a yes or no if their response is close to what I remember if it triggers my memory.

You didn't accidentally change the data services on/off setting did you? Under Options >Mobile Network >Data Services "On"

I had this issue the other day where I only has edge service instead of EDGE. I just resent my service books from mytmobile.com and it fixed itself.

TMobile has also been having trouble like this as of late with their data. I've had this problem too. Usually, I call them and they give me the line about yes there is an outage and no time resolution. They had a long outage a couple weeks ago and it seems to still happen sporidacally.

OK. more n00b questions. What's the diff between EDGE and edge? I don't know if I've ever seen edge on my ATT phone, right now it's saying EDGE (I'm in San Jose, lower Milpitas area).
I do a fair amount of biz travel. Sometimes when the plane lands and I turn on the phone, it takes some time for it to get back on the network. and during that time it may say GPRS before it finds EDGE. In general though, the only place I found so far where the damn thing just wouldn't work at all is the baggage claim area at the BWI airport. My company Verizon phone wouldn't work there either, zero bars of signal. I had to go outside into the steam in order to call the hotel to send the shuttle.

From what I have heard about the two is that:
EDGE=full signal maximum speed
and I have heard 2 things for edge:
edge= a lot of people on network, not maximum speed or
edge= can see tower in range but cannot connect using edge(shows this a lot if you have no data plan)
in this case it shows edge but stays in GPRS mode.
GPRS= fast but not as fast as EDGE(not quite sure how GPRS works)

Here is what it means in a nutshell:
EDGE = Connection established to the carrier's data and RIM servers for data
edge = Connection established to the carrier's data but not RIM's data.
GSM = No data connection at all

Just so you all know, John Clark was the winner - thank you so much.
For whatever reason, under data services the setting was "off when roaming". I don't know why it wasn't working, seeing as I'm not roaming, but now that it works I'm not complaining.
Thanks everyone for your help. Now I just get to deal with all the e-mails that have accrued over the last week and a half.

Also, it might be worthy to note, when you turn off data services as abhicles did above, it shows edge. I've learned that that turns off the carrier's data, as well. So, there is no carrier data (TCP) or RIM data when that is set to off. It really should show GSM when that setting is turned off.
