Default WTF? 9700 keeps crashing

Please Login to Remove!

Man what is going on with these damn things? I have TWO 9700s, one personal and one for work. Both frequently crash at the strangest times, and have to be rebooted. Sometimes it's frozen solid and a battery pull is needed. Why are these things so unstable? My old Pearl never crashed. These Bolds crash a couple times a month. Suggestions? Thanks.

You must have the "crash often" option installed...mine never does it, not my 9700 or my 9780.

Seriously though -- need to know the OS version and any other particulars about the unit, like which 3rd party apps are installed etc...

It's not unstable. You are going to have to do some sleuthing. Since you have two (identical?) units with (same?) problem, first question is what the two have in common.

Look at installled applications, third-party themes, free memory, microSD card.

Too many apps running at the same time -i particularly apps you may not realize are running in the background -- would be my first suspicion.

I had some issues with opera mini crashing my phone when I had os5. but I was attempting to use it when it would freeze or crash. Are you using any certain app when this happens? Or just used anyone prior. Just throwing some options to watch for as my sons 9700 with os5 is so stable and this new seems good as well.

First thing you should do is to start one of the phone in safe mode. you can do this by a battery pull and when you put the battery back, keep the back button (between the trackpad and red end call button) pressed until the
Phone starts. This will only load the BB software and nothing else. If the phone doesn't crash in safe mode then it is one of the 3rd party applications and you will have to un install them one by one to find out the culprit.

Agree. If the device crashes when you open and app, then obviously that is the first suspect, and you should delete it and test for 24 hours or so.

Otherwise, an educated guess would be to start with third-party apps and apps that are set to run in the background when closed. Set the apps to fully exit when closed, or delete the app, and test for 24 hours.

Keep in mind, that some OS versions have had a cascading memory bleed problem. The longer you use the BB the faster you bleed memory, until you are doing a battery pull twice a day and ready to throw it against the wall.

If everything freezes briefly a few times a day, leading up to the final freeze-up, its likely your ram or flash memory is floating around zero, and it isn't autoboosting up, like its supposed to. This is especially true, when you notice that it freezes no matter where you are. A memory booster app that visually shows Ram/Flash/Objects is a valuable diagnostic and prevention tool. Power Mem @ Appworld is great.

I've seen this problem in every BB 6 leak and official, for the 9700. Some OS versions are stable for 1 week and gradually get worse at 10-14 days. My solution has been to re-install the OS over top of itself using Loader.exe.

With OS 5, you probably wouldn't have to reinstall that often, as its not a monster OS.

It's one of your way-too-many apps (for me) causing the problem. You'd have to start by removing them all and adding them back one at a time until you find the offending app, if you really want to nail it down. I'd even do a wipe /reload - because it's possible that the culprit app has "contaminated" your OS. The stock OS without any 3rd party apps (not including RIM apps) should not crash the device.
