Default Photos uploaded to Facebook rotated 90 degrees

This keeps getting better and better, photos taken are rotated incorrectly when uploaded to fb

I have seen the same thing, however this problem is NOT the phone, but instead the medium.

Facebook does not understand the rotational data written into the photos taken using the Storm. There is information written into the image for applciations which understand the rotational information, but it seems Facebook does not understand this.

I have seen this with vertically oriented photos. If you upload a horizontal image to Facebook you will find that it is correctly oriented. Take a photo with the hard keys to the right. You will see what I mean.

In short, this is NOT the failt f the Storm.

Well I must say this has never happened with the iPhone

Facebook does not recognize the rotational data written into the photos I take using my DSLR (Canon Rebel Xti). I just tested it.... therefore I postulate the following.

Assuming you are accurate that vertical images uploaded to Facebook from an iPhony..e are presented in the proper orientation, I bet the iPhone writes a "hard" rotation instead of a "soft" rotation.

That is a highly educated hypothesis. I would love to prove this out.

May want to Google iPhone photo orientation. The iPhone has many problems with it.

I'm going based off personal experience with the iPhone. I have posted at least 20+ pictures without this happening.

The first photo I took with the Storm it did.

SpeedFreak,

I am interested in proving out my theory. Are you able to upload one horizontal and one vertical image taken with your iPhone? If not, I can get a colleague to provide me with the images. Then, I can look at the XMP information and explain the rotational information.

The following information is copy/pasted from a page that explains different XMP values.

Orientation
integer 1 = Horizontal (normal)
2 = Mirror horizontal
3 = Rotate 180
4 = Mirror vertical
5 = Mirror horizontal and rotate 270 CW
6 = Rotate 90 CW
7 = Mirror horizontal and rotate 90 CW
8 = Rotate 270 CW

Again, I doubt that you are accurate, I just believe that there is a technical explanation in the way that the iPhone writes the orientation bit in the XMP in photos.

Why are you worried I thought the Storm went back today.

I will be sure to post a detailed report. I just have to get my hands on the representative iPhone photos.

Default The full report - I was somewhat correct.

Digital cameras released over the last few years write information on the orientation of the camera into the metadata of the images recorded. This metadata is currently stored in an Adobe created standard called XMP.

The Storm writes what I interpret as "true" XMP orientation information in accordance with the XMP standard. In an un-biased way, I have to say that it is my observation that the iPhone does NOT write "true" orientation information.

Attached to this post are four screen shots supporting my statement. There are two images from my Storm and two images from a colleagues iPhone. they are named StormH and iPhoneH for the horizontal images and StormV and iPhoneV for the Vertical images.

You will note that the Storm images have the XMP value for orientation specified according to the standard to which I referred earlier, while the iPhone photos do not.

You will also note that X and Y dimensions of the Storm image remain the same regardless of the orientation, as they should, while the iPhone, for lack of a better word... cheats and omits the orientation data and simply swaps the X and Y dimensions to set the orientation.

There is nothing "wrong" with the approach that Apple has taken here since not all consumer level photo applications understand the orientation data. By "hard coding" the orientation by swapping the X and Y dimensions on landscaped images, they "make it work".

So... to SpeakFreak, yes photos uploaded to Facebook from the iPhone will be properly oriented. I think the real failing here though, IMHO, is with Facebook as it should understand the proper XMP orientation data as other sites like Google's Picasa, Flickr and Kodak just to name a few.

I am sure I will draw flames for my comments, but they are in reality unbiased.

With regards,
MrMartyMac

PS - it is getting late and I don't feel like proof reading what I just wrote, so have fun with my possible typos.

PSS - for those actualy interested in challenging me on the XMP information, please refer to www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp/pdfs/XMPSpecificationPart2.pdf

Great and thank you for looking into this. I know that the FaceBook application that is out there 1.2 and 1.3 are very basic. I am hoping that 1.5 and 2.0 show a lot more features and a fix to the FaceBook's interpretation of the XMP data.

Default it isnt the Facebook App problem

This is straight up Facebook falling... Well... It is too easy...
Falling flat on its face.

I tested my theory by uploading images directly from my computer. Facebook as a whole needs to recognize the XMP. IMHO.

I usually upload pictures via my PC as the FaceBook application degrades the photos to much.

This was a fun little research project. Even if it was born from discontent.

Default Facebook is the problem

Facebook v1.3 is *not* designed for the Storm. The photos are an issue as is the poor interface (status/message/poke/etc. buttons)
