This very nice wireless network device does not support UMA. After weeks of trying to figure it out, I called them and they told me the WRE54G doesn't support UMA. Explains why when I wander out of range of my router, UMA drops but WiFi keeps going.

At that price you could purchase another WRT54GL and run DD-WRT on it; besides being able to create a WDS out of 2+ routers you can also crank up the mW tx/rx rate of the device -- you'll get better (wider/more) coverage at the expense of a bit more dirty connection, maybe a little slower. The typical router comes at 20mW or so (last time I looked) but DD-WRT will let you crank that sucker up to 100, 200mW or so (don't have it front of me to look right now).

I loved the idea of the wireless extender. No mods required (I did not use the word hack)

So I using the T-Mobile WRT54G router, but have another WRT54GS just sitting around not being used. Can that be used as a range extender? I've heard that it can, but I have no idea how to make it work.

I tried turning a WAP54G into a range extender and brought my house wireless down. Teen aged daughter was unamused. Back to the drawing board.

What version is the WRT54GS? Flashed recently?

Just put the most recent firmware on around the beginning of September. The WRT54GS is version 5

I flashed the WAP54G and found all sorts of new options - it may well be on the WRT54GS. Only one way to find out, right

I figure there should be a way since it's also a WAP (at least advertised like that on the box). Just have to figure it out.

Has anyone had better luck with the WRE54G range expander and UMA?

I have it setup at my house and it works great for WIFI on my laptop.

As far as my 8320, when I initiate a call in my router's area and then walk to an area that the range expander is working, it seems to keep the call going. But, if I stay in the range expander area after the call ends, it usually drops back to EDGE and only gives me WIFI without UMA.

It seems like it is almost working! Anyone else have any luck with this range extender and uma?

I gave up on them! Linksys says specifically that it doesn't support UMA. Good enough for me! I wasted enough time on them.

haha, I agree with you. I am about to go return the thing, but I am holding out some hope.

The linksys extender did not work with UMA at all. I also wasted countless hours trying to get it to work. I ended up with two Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 routers (one in repeater mode) and it seems to be working much better.
