Default 8830 Can't play .wav e-mail attachments?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey all -
New BB user. Happy with the new 8830, but have a question about e-mail attachments.

I have gmail integration working. At home, my voip lines send voice mail to gmail as a .WAV attachment.

Was hoping BB would be able to play those, so I could hear VOIP voice mails while on the road.

Do I need special software for this? Right now, 8830 doesn't seem to know how to open and play .wav e-mail attachments.

Being that you just got your 8830 your OS should be at least 4.2.x which supports playing .WAV files, it's the back-end that you are missing.

I can't speak to a BIS setup but for BES, you need to upgrade to BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange v4.1 Service Pack 2 to gain .WAV file attachment support. We use a Cisco VOIP solution and voicemail also comes in as an email with .WAV attachment. Anything older then BES 4.1 SP2 doesn't support .WAV file attachments.

FYI, I've heard that there is a strong possibility that 8700c's and older may not gain .WAV file support from RIM, forcing you to upgrade to a newer device. $$$ in the bank for them but you may want to check with your provider.

Lightbulb AudioPOP

I use a 3rd party program called AudioPOP for this.

I think you will find it if you search the forums.

Default Solutions So Far:

For BES:
Upgrade to BES 4.1 SP2
The WAV attachment distiller is enabled by default.

Possible alternative?:
BES 4.0 SP6
Enable the WAV attachment distiller
Open the BlackBerry Server Configuration panel (Start > Programs > BlackBerry Enterprise Server > BlackBerry Server Configuration).
Select the Attachment Server tab.
Change Configuration Option to Attachment Server.
Ensure that Audio Attachments is selected.
Change Configuration Option to Connector Configuration.
At the end of Format Extensions, type wav.
Restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Above info taken from KB05446:
BlackBerry KB05446

For BIS:
Use Virtual View's AudioPOP - $14.99
Wait until your carrier upgrades to BIS 2.3

If you are using BIS....Blackberry will be releasing a new version of BIS soon wich will include the ability to handle these types of attachements. You should contact your provider for more info.

Great! Thanks for the info. I hope I can avoid needing a 3rd party app, but it's good to know that's an option of Verizon is going to be a long wait.

I received a MS Word attachment today on a e-mail and couldn't open that either. (At least PDF attachments work! ... Any chance Word attachments will be supported in the new BIS update you mentioned?

We have a handful of users with Cingular 8800's who can listen to their .wav files just fine (BES is 4.0.6).

However, I received a 8830 from my Verizon rep (for 30-day demo) and cannot listen to .wav files from it. IT Policy is the same, and the 8800 users can still listen to their .wav files.

Is there something special with the 8830 - either on the device or with the plan - the allows the .wav files?

Default 8830 and VZW, got BIS update? Still no WAV support

Was optimistic this morning. Had trouble accessing BIS from a PC browser last night and then talk today of a BIS upgrade to 2.3.

Is there any way for use to confirm the version of BIS?

I'm looking forward to being able to open .wav e-mail attachments so I can hear VOIP messages send to my gmail account.

I've pushed Service books.

As of tonight, when I try to open a .wav attachment, I get this error message:

msg0001.wav
The document conversion failed

Is it just a matter of waiting a bit longer for the software to update?

I've received one .wav file that has successfully played. But all other ones that I've tried haven't. Not sure what the problem is.

That was exactly what was happening with me. But...

The latest .wav that came in played! Yay, I'm hoping it's all fixed now. Assuming it was just software updates that needed to get completely rolled out.

To the poster who suggested AudioPOP... I tried it. Their tech support was very dilligent in trying to help me trouble shoot but in the end the had the same problem I was having and recommended I try opening a new Google account, just for voicemails. With the BIS upgrade supporting .wavs natively, hopefully it will be smoother.

I just got another WAV about 10 minutes ago and it worked perfectly. Looks like the issues have been resolved.

I use GMail as well.

Although my .wav attachment played, I've since received three regular text-only e-mails that only the head of the e-mail came through, not the body. So, looks like there are still some bugs being worked out.

Have you checked the size of .wav attachment that does not want to play?

I'm getting the error "An unknown error was encountered", with even the smalled .wav files.

I just got off the phone with Verizon data support and was told that .wav files are not in their list of supported file types for the 8830 (I sure hope he's wrong!).

These are the audio files he told me were supported:
- midi, amrnb, wma (level 3), mp3, mpeg, aac

There are the video files he told me were supported:
- mpeg, mwa (version 9?), 3gp, 3g2, amc, a3g, skm

He suggested I wipe this demo unit I have and redo the activation (I didn't wipe it before I activated it the first time) and see if that helps.

I have 8800's from Cingular that work just fine for listening to .wav files, so I know it's not my BES.

I just got the unknown error when trying to send over an .mp3 file. So, looks like it might not be a playback error.

Wiped the device and reactivated. Much to my surprise, it STILL doesn't work (ok, I'm not surprised).

I am so not impressed with this device.....
