Default Re-Installation question..

Please Login to Remove!

First, BES 4.1.4/Groupwise

When I installed the SP4, I selected to install the MDS stuff. I figured I could play with it and learn a bit about it. Maybe use it in the future.

I hear it uses a lot of resources and since our BES is installed on a super nice (sarcasm) desktop machine, I was thinking I'd remove it. Of course there is no modify in the Add/Remove.

If I uninstall and reinstall BES will all my data/settings be stored in the MSDE database and be restored back into BES?

This is a different question, but still related. The machine that our BES is on is originally an evaluation copy. I all I've found for switching to a legit product key is re-install. If that's the case, then can I make that switch with no impact on my users?

Should be able to get the key and let it work.
Should not have to uninstall it.

Normally I'd break these up as they are somewhat different ...

@ ODOESESE - As long as you keep the naming convention of your BES and SRP info the same everything will work fine. This is effectively a knife-edge cutover

@ JstSurrender - As long as the HHs are v4.0 or above they'll be able to handle this wirelessly. Any 3.x HHs will need to cradle. That said, we've seen issues with some BES Domino versions where this doesn't work as expected. I don't remember exactly but I haven't seen the issue with Exchange BES.

So what do people do when they upgrade their servers to a new machine? Do they have to bring in all the blackberries?

as Long as you keep the same BES name and point to the same db then there is no need to reactivate the handhelds.

My Db is located on the same server...we're using MSDE that comes with the BES. Can you export or move a DB that is in MSDE?

You can. What you need to do is backup the db and copy the back to a different location. Install the same version of BES on the new hardware and install MSDE on the new hardware as well. Once you have BES installed on the new hardware, restore the db files to the new MSDE instance. That will overwrite your blank db with your old db. Then do any software updates you need.

If you use the media cd or download file to run the install, you shouldn't have to uninstall all of BES, you should be able to modify the install and just remove MDS.
