The person running our GroupWise migration to Exchange 2007 is saying our BB servers are not needed that we can just do away with them. I think I know the answer is you still need the BES, but I just wanted to get different opinions on the matter.

I would agree with NJ on this one as well, we are in the process of migrating from Groupwise to Exchange as well, you might want to have him clarify his remarks. He may be saying you can do away with them and go to Windows Mobile Devices, but if you are keeping the Berrys, keep the BES.

Maybe they meant that your BES for Groupwise servers aren't needed anymore... which is true.
You'd still need BES... but you need BES for Exchange now.

Definitely ask him to explain his statement. I would be worried to have him manage my BES and mail servers.

Sure you can do away with your BES servers ... you just lose all the functionality that you get with BES that you don't get with BIS.

Here's a reference from BIS 2.1 to BES 4.1 SP2 comparison (we're on BIS 2.5 now remember so this is a bit dated).

He's actually the lead for the Exchange migration and I'm running the BES side of the house. Hexxx8217;s got a lot of good people around him assigned to the project so I think we will be ok. Will have to find out what he really means by xxx8220;removing the BESxxx8221;. Either way itxxx8217;s not going to happen as without the BES security isnxxx8217;t the same when it comes to encryption.

I'm the lead for the BES migration and have figured out I will be working with two mail platforms for a while until everyone on the 4 servers are moved over to Exchange. Since we are going to a new mail platform using BES 4.1.5 or whatever is stable come October we will have to touch and reactivate all of the berryxxx8217;s, all 1300 of them. I figure I could tackle 1 server at a time using temp SRPs and a second SQL DB until all 4 are done. Once all users are migrated over we could then kill the GW mail server and GW SQL DB.

Hello all, new here and had a question on this.

I've just had our BES server dumped in my lap after the guy previous was let go. In a month we are migrating from groupwise to exchange, and I'm completely lost in what to do. I've had to learn how to do everything on my own. Its been rough, but I've managed.

Right now we are running on a dedicated win2k3 server and want to move to a virtual server. We have about 30 users so its not a major move.

What do I need to know about migrating from groupwise to exchange?
After I set up the server, do I have to completely wipe the devices and re program them?
I know how to export the cal's over, but are there any other numbers/policies that I would have to bring over, or just create new polices on the new server?

Any help would be appreciated. Its gonna be a long month for me.

As it stands right now, there is no way that I know of to Migrate from Groupwise to Exchange versions of BES.

It SHOULD be possible, but I don't think RIM has gotten that far yet.
