Question Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) Support

Please Login to Remove!

Please forgive my newbie reposting...I have posted this is technical forum as well...Does anyone know if Blackberry supports or plans to support EMS? I currently have a 7250 with Verizon. The 120 charecter limit on SMS is causing me some issues.

EMS is actually dependent on both the handheld and the carrier. It is supported by some BlackBerry handhelds (such as the 7100), but is not supported by all carriers. The same goes for MMS and SMS.

Thanks JesseD,

I called Verizon and they said its not...Just doesn't make sense to me that Blackberry wouldn't support the EMS standard. I looked on the Blackberry site as well and couldn't find any information on EMS.

Unfortunately this is true! I guess it's because there more concerned about push emails than SMS, sorry.

FYI, TMO just pushed out service books for MMS on the 7100 and 7290 model handhelds. Also, the BB website doesn't say anything about MMS functionality being available in the specifications for the 7100, but its now there.

JIBI:
Is this in selected Markets? I have followed a number of messages regarding this Service Book and it has yet to be pushed to my phone in So. Cal.

Thanks

No I believe that it requires the 4.0.2 Software packages, never saw it before I installed 4.0.2.25

correct. 4.0.2. you must register onto the network (Settings -> Host Routing Table) if you already updated to 4.0.2 prior to last wednesday or so. if you're doing a new install of 4.0.2, then it should do a new network registration after the registration.

I spoke to my company's Verizon rep...He confirmed that EMS is not available for the 7250. He is looking into an enhancement request with RIM. He also mentioned the 7100 series would be available for Verizon around the end of this year...

no. thats just your carrier most likely charging you more than once for a single SMS

sometimes providers will allow you to type up to 3 SMS messages in one and send. on the other end, it comes out in 2 or more messages, usually prefixed with 'cont.' for continued on the latter of the messages.

EMS is basically the middle stepchild of SMS and MMS. it allows you to do pictures, etc. if a provider is offering MMS, then its better, imo, than EMS.
