The real reason for the Gmail mess?
Please Login to Remove!
So I was slightly disappointed about the lack of true Gmail syncing (with or without IMAP) on my new Blackberry, but accepted it and decided to patiently wait for an update.
Then I thought it was a bit strange that the Google guys--some of the most talented software engineers on Earth--couldn't get a crappy little issue like message syncing to work. I mean, Outlook 95 does it perfectly, and Gmail can't? It's the most popular smartphone and an e-mail service with tens of millions of users--you'd think they would put a little more effort into it. So I'm thinking maybe this is a result of Google secretly hating on RIM and waiting to improve their own client so much that people will stop using the Blackberry client altogether. Especially with Android coming, wouldn't that make sense?

So what you're saying is RIM is intentionally depriving us BIS customers of a feature that they could have easily implemented but decided not to?
Awesome.
Knocks, I too feel your pain and I find it quite ridiculous. I think I should have done more research before getting my BB.

Well, I think we all know that the delete function syncs, but I'm pretty sure what he is getting at by specifically saying "true" syncing is the additional [ideally instant] sync of the read/unread status that is only available via BES.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry 8320 Curve)
Read/unread sync works perfectly with Yahoo mail via BIS.

If you didn't read the first post, the main topic here is Gmail
If only switching email accounts were that easy, I'd switch to Yahoo in a heartbeat... well, maybe... I kinda love the Gmail web interface.

Honestly, i use the GMail apps for my GMail account and for my GoogleApps account (the red and the blue envelope) and they work just fine. No need to sync anything at all.
My work mail is on BES.
My personal is on Google.

@tbhuang2: I know the topic is about Gmail. What I wanted to point out is that if Yahoo can do it, then it's doable, and Google should do it as well.

Not so much. I find that GMail syncs no worse than my work Exchange email (via BIS). Better, in fact.
So, from my end, I see nothing in GMail sync that makes me think that Google is trying to sabotage anything.

I've been using Gmail with my BB without any sync delays for at least one year.
Also, Gmail is a free service from Google, you should feel lucky that you have that option.

RIM doesn't sync mail in any manner. It does have applications and services to reconcile your messages, such as with BES. If you need that full reconcile, then I suggest those users check it out.

Note the red square and arrow:
Gmail works fine here. I send myself a test email and it arrives on my 8320 right away.
When I first got my 8100 I had problems with Gmail, but deleting then re-adding the account at one point seemed to resolve those issues.

I think the original author was referring to Gmail-on-BIS being feature incomplete which definitely lacks full IMAP support.

Everyone who says Gmail on BIS syncs fine apparently have never used IMAP e-mail before. This has nothing to do with mail not arriving on time. Syncing usually implies updated read and deletion status that works both ways.
Suggestions to switch to BES are also kind of silly, since Yahoo mail (which is also a free service) works on BIS exactly the way it's supposed to. Which only supports my point about Google's true intentions.
By the way, the "beta" monicker for Gmail is nothing but a running gag on the Google campus. In Gmail's early days they got a kick out of its vast superiority to Hotmail, even in beta status, and Gmail is still whooping every other free service's butt, so the "beta" is probably going to stay forever.

So you are just on a rant, or you actually have a feature need for Gmail?
Already, it syncs "read" and "deletes" between the BB and server, and reverse.
And if it doesn't for you, then you need a Google Forum, because as you stated and we know, it does work for Yahoo mail, BES, GoDaddy IMAP (and GMail). So it's not a BlackBerry problem for you, but a Gmail problem, right?

It's not a Blackberry problem or a Gmail problem. It's a Blackberry + Gmail problem. I'm just realizing it's probably never going to be fixed and stating the reason why. And I can live with it because I'm at my computer most of the day, but for many people it's annoying to mark their messages as read on the blackberry when they've already read them on the web.
And seriously dude, it doesn't work with IMAP.

eh, to each their own then. For many, it does.
We can agree to disagree on the matter if you like it better that way.

Works seemlessly and instantly for me... i.e. gmail sync
Perhaps, its just an end-user issue?

It's amazing how some people refuse to admit even well documented issues.
