Is there anyway to remove the emergency call option when the keyboard is locked?
I'm getting tired of receiving calls from local 911 operators wondering if I'm okay. While I appreciate the concern, I'd like to get rid of this. Any thoughts?

hmmm, they would not call you, were you not calling them first?

I believe the emergency call when locked is a must-have by law.

Yeah, it seems I call them and then they call back because I don't know it happens.

I've not had this on any other phone, so I was suprised to see it on the bb.

Is 911 set up on a speed dial? Maybe it's being hit before your keyboard actually locks?

If it's on a speed dial, remove it and see if the problem goes away.

The OP is likely hitting the call key when the device is locked, a call that will go through while the KB is locked.

Do you keep your BB in your pocket, purse, etc.,? In a holster?

It's got nothing to do with the speed-dialing. When the phone is locked and any button is pressed, there are 3 options. Unlock, Emergency Call, and Cancel.

It just so happens, that the OP has it locked, and unluckily selects Emergency Call, then OK to confirm.

As far as I know, there is no way to disable that. But look on the bright side, at least it has avoided calling other people and saving you minutes!

It is nice to know that the 911 people are there...I suppose.

I keep it locked in a holster. It will only happen sometimes, but when it does happen, it happens a lot. I think that's just due to having it on the emergency call selection, whether I want it or not! I just figured I would check with the pros to see if there was a way out of this. Thanks all!

You could be placing it the wrong way in your holster too.

If it is a belt clip holster... face inward towards the belt clip.

Is that only for Blackberries? I don't recall having that on regular phones.

Only for some BlackBerrys in some holsters.

Other phones, I don't know.

Only problem is, that is some areas, he can be charged for the 911 calls. and multiple calls... can get him in other trouble.

Personally i don't like the "feature" either. I've never called 911 on accident, but i do see it can be easy to do.

However it is the law in the US (as I understand it) that cell phones have that capability.

I don't know if the 8330 has a different setup, but the key sequence to accidentally dial 911 on my 8320 seems a litte tough.

Trackball click (or return key)
roll down 1 (to Emergency Call)
Trackball click
roll up 1 (to Yes)
Trackball click

Maybe it's dialing the call log?

I have this problem, too. My 3 year old keeps playing with my blackberries and making emergency calls. The 3rd time was yesterday and it is embarrassing and potentially costly.

Suddenly I understand why you can't disable this feature. When the phone is locked, you can't dial 9-1-1. When you press the keys, it starts entering your password.

Regardless, I need to do a better job keeping the phone out of my kid's hands.

One more thing I noticed about the locked mode is that it can change the text mode (i.e., number/symbols or all caps) and I end up putting in my password 2 or 3 times.

***Updated to add***
I started putting the phone in Standby mode, and it works much better! My little one got the phone this morning and he kept saying "it's off, it's off!"
