Default Real offline GPS on blackberry is available now !

Please Login to Remove!

Hi, Guys:
The wait is almost over.
The power of real GPS is 100% unleashed. Consumers can be liberated from the cell phone network to enjoy GPS navigation service, which means, if you get stuck somewhere in Montana in a cold winter day without cell phone signal, then this offline GPS will save your life !

A lot of users reported success on www*berrymail*cn with a new software gpsmaps, which can be downloaded from www*gpslook*net

I cannot figure out how to make north american maps for this software, maybe some experts can help.

Finally, no monthly fee for GPS on blackbarry !

Hard to test... both of the above are Chinese websites.

If you are able to get these to work, please do report back.

There are at least to other offline GPS mapping solutions, listed in this GPS section.

In fact, I just returned to the states from China. Two days ago in Shanghai, I tried this program and worked great !

It's not just an offline mapping, it is a real navigation, but also works as standalone navigation tool, like Garmin GPS or TomTom GPS.

I hope some experts here can explore the software source code and help us on how to make North American map for this program.

Will it work with 8830? It seems to me that gps won't work on 8830 without phone network connection. :(

It worked on my 8800, others reported success on 8820.
Even on BB without integrated GPS, you can connect to external gps puck to get it running on device like 8700.

The beauty is, cannot be over emphasized, it works even there is NO cell phone signal ! Because you can download map data to memory card and use it offline !

The perception of using GPS requires cell phone network is
a very bad idea, which is motivated by business cash flow.
GPS should give users freedom anywhere, anytime, not limited to cell phone network.

I did not realize that the BB was popular enough in China to support a gps application.

I guess I will ask - are those sites safe to visit? I'm a bit reluctant to "travel" to China and get bitten by some hijacking page.

This looks like what we've been wanting... if you translate the page with google you can read about it although the translation is no where near perfect... maybe it would be possible for a programer to take this guys program and translate it to english and give us a usable offline gps ....

Can you save the downloaded google maps to your blackberry and reuse it in the area with zero cell signal ?
If not, you still remain slave of cell network coverage rather than live freely thanks to the wide coverage of GPS satellites.

Just an FYI, Mobilegmaps has a known problem that when you load Googlemaps (i.e. just log into it), it deletes mobilegmaps (doesn't seem to uninstall, just deletes any way of loading the program, so you basically have to reinstall). Seems to be a known issue on mobilegmap's web site from what I've read there. I'm looking for a way to do offline GPS maps too, but I depend too much on Googlemaps to not use it, which seems the only way you can use mobilegmaps.

I doubt it. I frequent this subforum and I haven't seen anything. As you can see this topic has been dead for the past 6 months.
