I activated my Metro PCS Blackberry Curve 8330 today. Everything works, except I sent some pictures from my Virgin Mobile phone as MMS to my Blackberry's phone number, but it never received them.

I just sent an email with a picture attachment to the Blackberry from my Gmail address and the Blackberry received it successfully. I am thus forced to conclude that VM USA are once again being idiots and probably blocking me from sending pictures to a number not on their network.

I also tried to set the Blackberry up with my Twitter account. I went through the procedure on the site of adding my new phone number (with the +1 before it) and sent the verification code it generated to 40404. I just received a text back saying that 40404 is not supported or the user has not subscribed to SMS.

How can that be?

It does sound like it was either blocked or the right data packages wern't added to your account. Best bet is to give your carrier a call and describe your situation.
