I want to view my text messages by person, not by date...is there a way to do that already on the curve..or is there aftermarket software that can do that?

Also, Is there a way to have it pop up instead of just show on the little asterick on the icon.

you can always search (builtin) for that otherwise. Once you navigate into a text message by said person(/conversation) it will show the conversation up to I think 30 previous messages between you and them. Options -> SMS Text.
