Default Playbook WILL support Android Apps!

Please Login to Remove!

I'm listening to the 2011 Fiscal year end report and Balsilie just stated "Support for over 200,000 Android apps" on the PlayBook.

So there you have it.

Now that is a huge discriminator! Nice to have reality match up to rumor for once.

...if it isn't some hokey emulator shell (like running PalmOS emulator)

I still wonder if Angry Birds will come to the PlayBook in a native format. Either way, though, this is great news.

That's it!! Now I'm ordering one for sure.

Interesting statement about running the Android apps in a secure sandbox - good idea since there have been more than a few malicious Android apps - stealing information and other nasty tricks.

But will those other goodies include 3G? Or will I be playing Angry Birds instead of surfing the web while I wait at a long grocery store check-out line?

If you've read any articles on the Playbook, you'd see that the first models will have wifi only. Later models will have 3g/4g.

PlayBook Coming April 19, Available for Preorder at Best Buy - PCWorld

Quote:
The PlayBook available for preorder at Best Buy does not have a 3G option, but RIM is expected to unveil 3G + Wi-Fi and 4G + Wi-Fi versions in the future. In February, RIM said 4G PlayBooks would arrive during the second half of 2011 for LTE networks such as Verizon's, HSPA+ networks such as AT&T's and WiMax networks such as Sprint's.
This is the same as what sites have reported.

For people having trouble getting their heads around this, it is the same as the iPad. WiFi only at initial release. 3G/4G to come in a few months. If the WiFi version doesn't work for you, then don't buy it!

I didn't see this mentioned in the previous posts. Android apps will not be available with the first release on April 19th..

From RIM's press release:

The new app players for the BlackBerry PlayBook are expected to be available from BlackBerry App World this summer. More information and demonstrations of the new app players will be shared at BlackBerry World.

I just took my Torch and threw it across the room to have it land on concrete.... doesn't seem too delicate to me.

I've got a friend at RIM who will take his Torch, throw it on the floor, or slam it on a desk multiple times, he really likes showing off how tough it is

That being said.. I've seen a Curve 8900 and Bold 9700 both crack their screens after being dropped less than 5 feet.

Folks, the Android apps will be running inside an emulator, don't expect nearly the same performance as you'd find on a dedicated Android device.

The supported Android revision is 2.3, which is a phone OS, not a tablet OS.

Finally you won't be able to load apps from Android Marketplace, Android devs will have to repackage, submit and possibly pay RIM to host their apps in BlackBerry App World.

Suffice to say I wouldn't recommend pre-ordering a Playbook based on the expectation of a solid Android experience.

Thanks,
I think what I was trying to get at was how those emulation layers will be implemented. i.e. will they be transparent to the user. I used the PalmOS emulator example on purpose. The POS emulator literally turns your device into a Palm and it brings up a windowed virtual palm pilot and you can run apps within that Palm "Window"

An alternate way of doing this is making the adaption layer invisible to the user. All they see is a regular app icon and they click and it opens in it's own window. i.e. the user would never know it's an Android app.

Option #1 is acceptable, but not ideal

QNX Neutrino RTOS is a modular OS. It shouldn't have an issue running the Dalvik VM (*gasp* Android is already a Virtual Machine) or similar Java VM on top of the Neutrino kernel. Remember that Android is Dalvik VM running on a Linux based kernel. It runs on devices at much slower speeds than the 1Ghz Dual Core OMAP 4430 that powers the PlayBook.

Architecturally, the PlayBook should rock any version of the Android OS that has been made Open Source.

No, Dalvik is only part of Android and in fact is very similar to running a Java virtual machine on top on a Windows PC, because there's a whole native code operating system underneath it.

It's this native code OS which will be running in an emulation environment, similar to running a Windows VM on a Linux computer where the Windows VM is Android and the Linux computer is the Playbook. There will be a big hit in overall Android performance compared to what you'd expect by running Android on Playbook-grade hardware natively.

That said you may not notice it for forms-style apps that have no real performance considerations.

Just saw the video on Crackberry - looks like the Android apps will integrate in a seamless manner to the user. Nice! Integration worth waiting for

Looks pretty slick................ PROVIDED........ RIM doesn't get all "Apple" on us and only port apps that don't conflict with apps they provide. The Kobo reader is useless unless you buy all your books from them. With 500+ epub books in my library, I need a good e-reader that will run on the Playbook AND import those books. There are several good ones in the Android Market. Would love to see them ported over... and SOON!
