My storm has begun not always responding to touch on the screen. This is an intermittent problem and is not isolated to just one part of the screen. I replaced the battery a couple of months ago. I have hard reset it with the battery out. I do not have the current software version so I thought that maybe updating the software might solve the problem. I backed things up and tried to download the latest version but it would not open appropriately after downloading. I assume that the problem there is that I am using a Mac. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Find a friend with a PC, wipe the BB with Jl_cmdr (see the FAQ) and reinstall the OS (see the yellow sticky at the top of the 9500 section). Make sure you only install an OS for the 9530 and that you follow our instructions EXACTLY.

I doubt it's an OS issue, but you can try. You can also wipe your device and reload the OS with BBSAK. It deletes the vendor.xml for you, and I'd recommend SaskTel's 5.0.0.419 over the crappy 328 from Verizon.
