Default BB Desktop Manager Random Number?

I see the BB manager seeds a random number generator. What is the functionality of that?

Its used to randomly generate encryption keys based on mouse movements.

OK, but what purpose do they serve? And believe it or not, I searched under "random number", went through three pages of posts and found no answers, otherwise I would have not asked.

What purpose do the encryption keys serve? Isn't that sort of obvious?

Guess not, or why would I have asked? I used to just use the VZacess Manager route to go on the web with the tethered modem. So I was not as secure not using the BB Manager? I really just want to know. Thanks
