Laid off, no more BES, best alternative?

So after 6 years of relying solely on my corporate email account with Exchange/BES i'm moving on. Which of the big free email providers work best with a non BES'd Blackberry? I'm starting over so it doesn't really matter which one, hotmail, gmail, etc... Hopefully I can still get wireless calendar and contact syncing. What do you think?

There's not much difference from carrier to carrier in how well BIS works. It's more about the carrier's network coverage in your area that counts. RIM handles the BIS heavy lifting, so choose a carrier based on coverage first. Price also comes into play as well as plan features.
With Sprint, unlimited BIS (all data and email), unlimited messaging and SMS texts, 450 minutes per month, plus Any Mobile Anytime (calls to ANY mobile phone don't count against your minutes - they're free) goes for $70/month.

There are hosted BES solutions that add $15 or so to your monthly bill on top of your BIS plan, but that gives you wireless calendar and contacts sync.

No BB wireless anything sync if you aren't on BES. Sorry.
If you are using BIS, which is the alternative, I would suggest that gmail is probably the easiest to use on a BB. Best is more in your court. What is best for one, might not be for another. I suggest using the search function and also Google Search to see what you find.
You can wirelessly sync calendar and contacts using GoogleSync.
Just make sure that the IT Policy is removed from your BB if it was used on the BES.

Open a hotmail account and then sync it via BIS... works great for myself and my wife.
Or... use Blackberry email (when you get your phone you can create your own Blackberry email address)

Both are actually pretty bad suggestions.
Hotmail offers no PIM sync features at all.
The BlackBerry.net email account cannot be accessed outside of the device itself and also has no PIM sync.
GMail or Yahoo Mail would be much better alternatives, as they offer some wireless PIM sync and much better wireless email reconciliation.
Gmail with GoogleSync is a good way to go. |

I would suggest Hosted Exchange/BES service with a split domain. You get all the wireless sync benefits of Exchange/BES while using an e-mail address of your choosing. Check the sponsors section here for providers.

It sounds like gmail is the best of the big free. I heard their syncing is just one way to the device, is that true?

No, not true. GoogleSync offers two way wireless sync of calendar and contacts.
You'll also get two-way wireless reconciliation of email deletes, which is pretty nice.

Gmail with Google Sync will get you immediate push mail, contacts, and calendar sync. It's the next best thing to BES.

ok, so if I go with gmail which is the best method. Sounds like google sync is good, anyone know what this "Enhanced Gmail plug-in for Blackberry" ( BlackBerry - Enhanced Gmail™ Plug-In) is all about? |

Now that I understand the calendar and contacts portion what about email. I assume the only options are imap and gmail mobile app right? Which one is better? Does the mobile app integrate well with the blackberry os?

I have a BB on Att BIS with multiple Yahoo email addresses, works well.
I also have a corporate BB with an added Yahoo email address, it works just the same.
Your question on an email APP, their available but the native messages folder will work.

In my opinion, stick with the native messages folder if you have been on BES. It is a change to start using Gmail app on the device. The google sync I am unfamiliar with. Yahoo works great with BIS and you might get a better choice of the ![[email address]](?emailimage=9703efa835ef0294d9778535899ccbf3) or ![[email address]](?emailimage=8ce92a6fb9067af5c91c563852d7aa1d) . Both part of yahoo. |
