Private info on BES
Please Login to Remove!
I am looking for a definitive answer on what a BES can and cannot see. We get a lot of questions concerning it so I thought I'd ask the experts.
I have talked to several Admins and seen posts on here about it and there is disagreement on what is private and what isn't when your device is connected to BES. Some say they can just about everything if they want to, from other email to calendar to TMs to IM chats, Internet usage, etc. Others say just the company stuff, and some say something in between.
My position has always been to never assume that anything is private or personal but I have taken a few hits lately for that position.
So I figured I would ask the real experts and see what you say.

The BES can 'see' most things, although to be fair most of the data isn't actually stored on the BES, it's actually on the mail servers. That is, if I want/need to see someone's actual corporate email, that would be accessed from the mail server, not the BES.
What syncs/is stored/is accessed by the BES includes:
- Corporate email
- Corporate calendar
- Corporate PIM data (address book, memo pad, tasks)
- Browser bookmarks
- Password Keeper data (although this cannot be accessed in any way, even when restored to another document, without the PK password)
- PIN messaging data (including the actual message sent/received)
- Phone call data (date/time of call, number called/received, length of call)
- Text message data (including the actual verbage of the text message)
- Blackberry Messenger data (this one is extremely klunky to get and I don't know a single BES Admin that turns this one on)
What I can't see:
- BIS email messages (I *might* be able to see what service books you have, but cannot read the messages)
- 3rd party IM messages (Yahoo!, MSN, etc)
That's all I can think of for now.... I'm quite sure someone else will chime in.
Just to add - I do agree with your stance of "If you have a concern about what can be seen, either don't connect your device to the BES or don't do something you know will get you in trouble".

Wirelessly posted (Pearl 8100)
The above poster is perfectly right, especially when it comes to bis and im clients, which is why most bes admins disable this function.
I'd also say in addition to the above, all web activity can be logged, as well as any applications installed by the user.
And i'm with you, if the device has been provided by the company, use it for their business and their business only!
Oh, also, any photos take by the bb can't be seen or anything on the memory card, however I think that may change with the launch of bes 5 but don't quote me on that!

Thanks for the info and the additional link. I missed it somehow.
As for those who tried to poke a little fun at my expense, I was only looking for the correct information and answers to my questions.
Thanks to those who provided it.

Just telling me that I was wrong in my assumptions and position. Lets leave it at that.
Guess since I am not a BES Admin and not a member of their proprietary community, it is felt that I have no right to make assessments or opinions or offer constructive comments or ideas. However, I have been around both the Government and Corporate environments for more than a few years and think I have enough experience as a CEO and senior executive to make such assessments.

i dont understand people's rationale with that. i am def with you dubdub. i'd like to hear those people's explanation. you wouldn't be sending sexy emails to your lover on your corporate email from your desktop, so why would you be doing that with sms from your corporate owned blackberry? i dont understand what level of privacy you would expect.

Ah but they do! It is funny to see what they think love is though.

You actually read the emails?
I only glance over the ones that are considered spam or blocked by keywords. If I knew more about the people that work here I might throw up or be scarred for life. Good luck to you.

I have to say I'm with Dubdub on the privacy issue. Worked for BellSouth for about 8 years. Was actually there when they bought the initial Blackberry packet data network and had the BB without a phone. Safe to say, I always felt Big Brother was watching while working for that very large corporation. I have my own BB on my own hosted service. I love BES! My employer will allow us to connect to the corporate BES but I don't want to give anyone there access to all my personal data. Not to mention that I don't want to switch from Outlook to Lotus Notes!

This is great info to start, but am hoping that someone can give me some more clarification on these points:
- Password Keeper data (although this cannot be accessed in any way, even when restored to another document, without the PK password)
If I log onto say my Windows Live Messenger, or even my MSN or Gmail e-mail accounts, are they able to retrieve my account user names and passwords in this same way?
- Phone call data (date/time of call, number called/received, length of call)
Would BES be able to expose an unknown number? For example the person calling you has their phone set to show as unkown. Or another example is if your receiving international calls. On my phone bill if i receive an incoming call from a person who has set their phone to unknown or if they are calling internationally, it doesn't show up on my phone bill, just the date, time, length etc.
