Hey guys,

I am pretty new to the forum and I searched for an answer but couldnt find any. sorry if this was asked before.

my BB bold suddenly started dying in just a few hours. I have not uploaded or used any out of the ordinary programs. what happens is it charges to the full battery and while its on the charge or of it, it displays the "ticking clock" every other second. u know the ticking clock that shows bb is working on something, like when its opening up a program or smthng.
i am guessing it is trying to do something at the background and since it tries it all the time the battery dies after a few hours.

any ideas what can be done? other than resetting it?

well i got 31.8 mb of application memory. how to i refine that?

That seems fine, take out the battery for 30 seconds and then put it back in.

How does low memory affect battery performance?
I do not understand this BB "application memory"
issue , when it's low does it mean a lot of things are running in background or just too many programs installed.

This issue does not affect you much. Low app memory for everybody is different, but I'm sure everyone will agree that anything under 5 or 10mb of app mem is pretty low. It has to do with both a lot of things are running in background or just too many programs installed, but mainly with the first one. When you have low app memory, you should do a battery pull to "reset" the device which gets back a lot of app memory. Also application memory is affected by the number of messages, contacts, etc. After doing the battery pull, reinstall the os.

On the bold anything less than 15-20MB is concern for me. Performance seems to degrade at that threshold

How old is the battery?

Has it been properly treated, conditioned and charged as it should be (each night charge overnight, completely discharge about once a month).

Is it being left somewhere hot?

Is the phone in a place with bad radio coverage?

I would pull the battery and see if it continues. If it does, hit Alt+arrow back key to see what apps are currently running.

Any app using GPS, bluetooth, or WiFi is going to suck your battery dry quickly. If you're not using bluetooth or WiFi then turn it off.

And as always make sure you're on the latest device OS.

nope.
Its specifically mentioned that the kind of batteries the bold has (as well as a few other models) shouldn't have this done. they are Li-on (if i remember correctly) batteries, and dont need to be "conditioned".
Other people state it should be, others repeatedly state it shouldn't be done, and others say it doesn't matter either way.

I owned about 5 mobiles before getting a BB and had never heard about "conditioning" and I never had a problem with a battery, nor with my Bold's battery and I haven't "conditioned" it.

From my experiencing, you only need to condition Nimh batteries. The Bold has a Lion battery so, it doesn't require the "conditioning".

I would add that the best way to degrade and ruin the performance of a Lithium ion battery is to let it discharge completely before recharging.

Only an ignoramus or a lithium ion battery salesman would recommend it. Or perhaps someone who learnt one thing (applies to NiMh battery) and misapplied it to another.

Another possible reason for fast battery discharge, something that happened to me.

A few months ago, a number of game icons appeared in my download folder, either because AT&T did this or I downloaded them inadvertently. Out of curiosity, I clicked on one and ended up downloading and installing a game (Pacman or Scrabble, I think). Played with it for a minute and forgot about it. Found my battery was discharging very quickly. Deleted the game and fixed my problem.

This is like the same story with my HTC Dream at the moment. The OS just drinks the battery dry.

Could it be that the CPU is maxed out?

well guys cheers for the help, but even though i took the battery out for more than a minute and put it back up again, it seems to still do the same thing. Since it was heating up as well, xxx305; got scared and turned it off. gonna send it to be checked i guess.

Will let you know what the problem is..

Excessive heat and battery drain + "ticking clock" = you have a corrupted chunk of software on the device causing a processor loop. Do a wipe to see if that clears it up, if not (re)install new firmware.

I received my Bold yesterday. Brand new. I charged it, not overnight but the battery showed full at dinnertime. spend an hours or so last night looking thru apps to learn about it. This morning the battery was almost dead. I just signed up here to find out why. I have the Wi-Fi on but only spent 3 or 4 minutes on-line. Could this be running it down?

I also just received a warranty BOLD replacement and it feels like a seat heater in my pocket. My original battery was fried in 9 hours with this phone and my local AT&T store gave me a brand new one. I charged it with my old phone because I have not sent it back yet, placed it in the new one and it went from 100% to 45% in 35 minutes, and it was so hot I was forced to remove the battery. AT&T has yet another phone in the mail for me. I did install the newest OS. Do you think this has something to do with it or just a faulty phone?
