Default Internet/data usage

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
I am new to the Blackberry and I need to ask a question.... so here goes!
I have a BB storm and my package includes 600 minutes, unlimied text and 500mb of internet use.
I have just recieved my first itemised bill and it includes data usage which is fine BUT most of the usage is when im in bed like 2.30 in the morning, I made a point of NOT using the internet on my phone last Friday and on my bill its all listed as using similar to this....(Fri Feb 19 05:30 BLACKBERRY 54.153 Kb ) and it goes on with various times from 2.30am right through till night, but I know I havent been using it, I stopped all facebook and e mail activity so I wasnt getting alerts but still I am being charged, not much I know but it all adds up..... The other thing that drew my attention to it was I have my phone set to wake me up at 5.30am and even thats got data usage.
Thanks
Fingers crossed somebody can help

How did you stop Facebook and other data intensive apps? You need to close them down, not just exit out.

BTW, 54 K is not very much data.

The Alarm showing the same time data usage shows is just a coincidence. You can use the Alarm without a SIM card, it doesn't require data.

Was your Browser on a web page when you weren't using it. Maybe the page it was on refreshes periodically and that's why you see those charges.

What you can do is turn Data Services off before you go to sleep. This will ensure you that no data is being used whilst you sleep.

Belinda, your price plan kinda tells me you are in the UK, yes?

What intrigues me about your post is that you say you are being charged for the data, that shouldn't happen. The 500MB is just a guide, it doesn't mean using 550MB should mean you're in charging territory. If you give data a vigorous spanking month after month, then Voda will snivel and whine a bit, but not stick on extra charges. If you are paying above your priceplan for data you should call 191 and demand reimbursement.

On the other hand, if you're not paying real money for the data usage you mention then just forget it. Just as the phone periodically communicates with the network as a matter of routine, the same thing happens with the BB servers to inform BIS you're switched on and available.

BTW, you know you don't need the phone switched on for the alarm to work?

Different question but relevant. Wouldn't the time sync to network trigger some useage?

I use the auto on/off to turn off my BB at night between 11pm and 7am. That will stop your "usage". If you want to use the alarm, you just need to make sure the "auto-on" time is before the alarm time.

When you exit an application, you need to "CLOSE" it, not just exit it.

If all else fails, pull the battery, it will shut down everything

Actually, you don't need to set the Auto-on time before the alarm goes off. The Alarm will turn the device on regardless.

Thanks for all your replies

jsconyers, I turned off my data services off but as my vodafone bill info is very slow to update with the usage cost I cant tell yet if its stopped, but will let you know, hopefully tomorrow, I turned the data services off on Monday night so in theory I shouldnt have any data usage . Your right too about your phone not having to be on when you use the alarm, it just turns on automatically

Thanks again for all your advise

Belinda
