For the life of me, I cannot get Verichat or Reqwireless browser to work on my 7290 w/ Cingular (v3.8) using BWC. I keep getting that "Could not open tunnel" :error

I added under Tools - TCP:
APN: isp.cingular
Username:
Password: CINGULAR1
I am aware of the case sensitivity.

I called customer service at cingular and they said that wap.cingular was on my account.

I reinserted the battery several times.

Why can't this work for me????

Also, why can I not access certain html websites on the included Cingular browser, like www.ebay.com. It just sits on "loading" for 10 minutes or so...

A couple things to check:

1) after you restart your Blackberry return to Options->TCP and make sure you new settings are still there (I.e.- they were properly saved)

2) call Cingular and verify that, in addition to a wap.cingular APN existing on your account, you also have the "WIX" based plan info, which will ensure you have full data services capabilities.

From your post it sounds like some data services are functioning (your reference to having problems with "certain" websites via the Cingular browser). Can you verify that you are able to access some sites, but not others?

If so, you may try explaining to Cingular that you are unable to use non web-based data services, and ask them to verify that your account is enabled for them.

For wap.cingular, you need wap.cingular as your APN.

If you use isp.cingular, you need to ask Cingular for "isp.cingular" too, not just "wap.cingular"

Thanks for your reply. What's weird is when I go to Options - TCP, it does not list the wap.cingular that I entered. I entered it twice and made sure I saved it both times. But when I go to Options - TCP, it is blank, waiting for me to plug in the APN parameters. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

I can't tell if it's saving or not. I guess not because when I go back into Options - TCP, there is nothing there. But I am hitting save....

hmm... odd, but at least we've found the most likely cause ;)

just to verify, follow these steps to be sure we aren't missing something in the setup process:

1) Go to Options->TCP
2) enter your TCP network info
3) Push the scroll wheel
4) Select "Save"
5) you should now see the Options list with "TCP" highlighted
6) hit "Back" (button below scroll wheel)
7) Scroll to the last option on the main menu, "Power Off" and select it
8) wait for BB to power down
9) remove your battery, re-insert battery
10) once your main menu appears return to Options->TCP and see if your settings were saved

see if that does the trick.

Thanks so much for your help. I gave it one last try. What you suggested is exactly what I did in the past, but every time it boots up, under the Options - TCP screen it is blank. I just get:

Username for APN:
Password for APN:

All blank!!!!

I give up. I am getting too frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I just put in a bunch of garbage for my TCP settings, to see if perhaps some validation of the settings occurs to determine if they are accepted or not.

Looks like there is some validation occuring.

My garbage settings reverted to my previous "working" settings after restarting the BB.

Since none of your settings have yet been accepted that may explain why after resetting you continue to revert to empty values.

Perhaps either:

a) the settings you are entering are incorrect and not being recognized by whatever authority they are being validated against

or

b) your settings are correct, but the authority that is validating them does not believe they are valid for your account (e.g.- perhaps your data services are not properly provisioned; isp.cingular vs. wap.cingular as Mark pointed out)


1) try both wap.cingular and isp.cingular

APN: isp.cingular
Username:
Password: CINGULAR1

APN: wap.cingular
Username:
Password: CINGULAR1


2) if that doesn't work, seek professional help (again):

a) explain to them what you are experiencing

b) verify Cingular has an APN setting on your account for both "isp.cingular" and "wap.cingular"

c) verify you have the appropriate data services provisioned on your account (i.e.- the "WIX" line items referred to above)

What version of BlackBerryOS are you using? Options->About

It may also be Cingular is overriding the settings, but this is not happening on other BlackBerries that I know of. It may be fixable by a BlackBerryOS upgrade (I'm not sure though).

Another way to get TCP/IP is simply to pay $10-$25 per month for MDS service, which also provides other features. This will bypass your carrier and eliminate the need for this frustrating APN stuff.

Are any other people getting their APN information "locked"?

Uhm, i had the same problem

a) the TCP option under settings is of no use.
b) Are you sure other users on YOUR provider have public MDS working? It is very possible others have it working and you do not.
c) Call your provider and ask them to re-set your profile on the network. I had the exact same problem as you and i tried *everything* until realizing (with some help from kind users on this forum) that it is probably on the network side of things.

A re-set of your profile usually requires your device going off the network while the techs do it..

basically, it kicks you off the GPRS, re-sets your profile, then you turn wireless on again and you get GPRS, and you should then have MDS working IF you are sure your ISP supports it..
