Sometimes randomly it switches from 3G to EDGE, this doesn't happen a lot but every once in a while it does. When it happens I can't text anyone or make phone calls, so I always end up restarting the phone, what's good?

EDGE means you have a data connection (to RIM) but at a slower speed than 3G, typically 50-125 kbps.

The device will generally seek a 3G signal and if you are in a fringe area or outside of 3G, it will search in operate in and out of 3G. The usual result is the battery will run out quicker than normal.

You should be able to make and receive calls and send and receive SMS, but not at the same time as you are sending and receiving data.

Here is a better definition:

What is EDGE?

Is EDGE in capital or in lower case because if it is capitalized, then you should be able to make phone calls and sms messages as said above.

Doesn't matter.
You can make phone calls and send/receive SMS messages on EGDE or edge.

so lower case only means you have no data access?

"edge" generally means that the signal is present but your phone is not logged in i.e. with a BB, you are not connected to RIM. This is most likely to happen if you do not have a data plan or your phone (SIM card) has not been configured properly.

In many cases, a battery pull will fix the problem, assuming that you do have BB data.

I remember when edge/EDGE was the new hotness in phones. It was all about whose network was being upgraded to this new high-speed capability, and whose phone could actually handle it.

Remember when you stood in line to get that 14.4 baud modem? Then came along 28.8 and 33.6 and finally 56 K. Wow! We were smokin' then!

And now, all we do is complain when we only log on 2.5 mbps.

EDGE is something that's so painfully slow that brings you to the edge of desperation, you become edgy and seriously considering jumping off the edge of a cliff.

There may be other more useful answer on this. Scroll up

Actually by the time it gained momentum most carriers had already started provisioning 3G equipment and the technology was sidetracked/abandoned.

That's the reason you don't find that many edge enabled masts around the world. It was a transition technology that many carriers just skipped completely.

Idiotic might be a bit harsh. You can't possibly expect 446,576 forum members to share a common level of technology competence.

You're most welcome. Check the FAQ and if there's something you don't understand post your questions under the relevant section of the forums.
Have fun.

So when 4G is released globally, will phones that can support 3G, reach 4G speeds?

What about wimax? Can any berry obtain these speeds?

No. LTE and WiMAX are different technologies. Just like how EDGE devices couldn't get 3G speeds when 3G was available.

Thanks for the helpful responses, but it doesn't change the fact that I am still not able to text or make calls while it says EDGE. And its weird cause when I do the battery pull, it goes back to 3G even though I am in the same area. Like I said though, this isn't a huge issue as I don't see the EDGE at the top very often
