Default Alltel 8330 GPS Question

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

This is my first BB, and first BBforums post!

I've searched and read various posts about activating the internal GPS (without purchasing the 9.99/mo service). Here's what I have done:

1) In Options/Advanced Options/GPS I have

GPS Data Source: Device GPS
GPS Services: Location On

2) I clicked the 'orange' TeleNav app, accepted all the terms, downloaded and installed, and finally once it got to the option: $9.99 or Exit, I chose exit. (This is one of the procedures I read about to get the internal GPS activated without actually using the service.)

3) I start the "Maps" app, tell it to "Start GPS Navigation"

It just hangs on "Searching for satellites ... ". I also read about going to some third party "blackberrytracker" or something like that, but the site appears to be down.

If anyone can help out with this, I'd much appreciate it.

First, do you have a BB data plan? You need that use most of the Map applications.

To get the GPS lat/long, you need to be outside, with a clear view of the sky. It can take 20 minutes or more to lock on, especially if this is the first time.

Next, check out the sticky at the top of this section (GPS & Maps) for reviews of most of the map applications for the bB.

Thanks rasmith3530 and Dubdub. This is great info to work from. I'll report back on the results.

I might add here that I used the procedure that I linked in my first post. I have US Cellular as my provider and was told to use the settings as for Alltel. I can lock a dozen satellites in ten seconds or so.

I am using the following mapping applications... BB Maps, Nav4All, TelMap Navigator (Beta), amAze, and Trapster (not a "mapping app" per se, but uses GPS).

I have also tried Google Maps but have found it to be extremely inaccurate with my phone. Others that I've discussed this with at Howard Forums have said the same.

I have noticed that at times, I have to do a battery pull to refresh the phone.
