Default 8100 Pearl Cingular - Can you still tether on the BB UNL plan?

Please Login to Remove!

I have been trying for a couple of days to get my new Pearl to tether on Cingular, and i keep getting the "Error 734 PPP" errror.

I chatted with Cingular tech support today, and they say you cannot tether without the $75 data plan, that they have closed the WAP connection. Does anyone know if this is true? (Note: I have never gotten a connection to work, so it's not like I know whether it has ever worked!)

TIA

If they have a tether-specific plan, then yes, you'll need that to make it work. There may be a work-around...you might dig around the Forums for that possibility.

Make sure you add this string EXACTLY(including quotes and periods):

+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

And quit calling Cingular...they won't help you tether without the $80 tethering plan.

hope this helps,

AF1

Tethering allows you to hook up your Pearl to a laptop and use it as a dialup modem. But instead of it using a dialup modem it just connects to the providers wap. Awesome to use when not around a wifi access point, but it's slow at around 115 kbps (though still faster than standard dialup). Hope that helps.

I get the 734 PPP error every time. I have teh string just like yours, I've tried usernames and no user names. I'v etried *99#, and *99***1# as numbers; Is there some basic chnage that you have over the instructions that are found here?

I'd be very appreciative if you'd throw me some of that magic pixie dust...

Um, I just re-read the end of the tether thread and it seems that Cingular is able to see how many minutes or data that you use to transfer and you get quite a bill for it... go search up the original thread that SF wrote to teach us and read the last posts and it'll say that Cingular can detect it... while T-mo just doesn't care.

If I could I would.

I had trouble getting mine to work yesterday after several months of trouble free use. I ended up deleting the dial-up connection and creating a new one(exactly like the previous one, with the same string). Why that fixed my problem I have no idea. I wish I could help you. I use Vista and I think an auto upgrade Microsoft did screwed something up.

Willie: I have yet to be charged for tethering, but then again, I do not abuse it and only use it lightly. If you use a BUNCH of data, then yeah, you're probably going to raise a red flag and draw attention to yourself. This month I used ~45MB of data via tethering and the internet via the device, combined.

Just got working right now. Mine looks like what you've entered, but try double-checking.

I signed up for the BBunlimited tethering plan 2 days ago and it is $59.99.$74.99 if you want text messageing which I didn't. If you use the AT&T communication manager it sets it all up for you and you just click on it to connect.

Voila!!

It was the login / password combination. It worked first time like a charm!

Now, how are we going to get dinged by AT& T on this if we have unl data?

It's a shame they won't let us tether like TMobile does...

Thanks!!

Just got my first bill from AT&T after getting tethering to work. I had run a small test, jsut to see how bad I'd get tagged, opening two web pages, I think. 362KB @ .01 = $3.62

I don't think I'll be using it to tether

Man, that's weird. I've been tethering(lightly) for months on at&t and have never been charged for data, except for the usual $29.99 a month for unlimited data.

I wonder why they nail some people and not others..? Especially considering you only opened two web pages. I hardly use it, but I open more than two web pages a month.

Its possible that some of the older customers get the "better plan". Phone companies aren't allowed to alter their service, or how the charge for it from the day you sign up, otherwise they're in breach of contract (and can't charge you early termination fees).

I've only been signed up on the BB data plan since February though. Not sure, but I think they've been charging for tethering longer than that.
