I've installed Ubuntu 6.10 on a laptop dual booting with XP. I've been trying vit out. Most things work except it refuses to work well with my video card. I've tried every trick on their forums, but it just won't work. I'm looking for a distro that will work.

Laptop is a Sager np5670, but I have also tried it on a Dell Inspiron 8200.

Sorry for this Off-Topic question, but Linux users are generally pretty friendly.

How the heck do I get to add my icon/avatar thingy? I don't see any option for that anywhere in the user CP...

Mandriva (Mandrake) here for years, just like the urpmi, it solves dependencies extremely well.

Urf!

FreeBSD hates my Sony laptop.... 6.2 was 'said' to be where Unix should have been 4 years ago... The reivews said it was ready... NOT!

While it worked on my old laptop, everything was a no go on the Sony.... Sheesh! No wireless, no sound, mousepad a no go.... BSD is still a LONG way being ready! I could have tinkered and got all of the above working but I figure it should pretty much out the box OR I am NOT going to mess with it... This is 2007 right? Is it to much to ask? I think not....

Ok, so (you can probably see my GF rolling her eyes) I am in the process of DL and installing Ubuntu 7.04.... Looks promising with new wireless, new print system, and I have seen it has a windows migration tool.... I am thinking WOW based on the reviews this might actually be a windows replacement.... We shall see.... i will post back my 7.04 findings....

As for freeBSD 6.2.... All I can say is NO THANKS!

My point about BSD is this:

How many users could figure out using this to get wifi working??

Code:
kldload if_iwi
iwicontrol iwi0 -d /boot/firmware -m bss
ifconfig iwi0 up
BSD is NOT ready....

AND that was just for wifi.... Wanna try sound??????

Ok.... 7.04 ROCKS!

I am however back on 6.06... Why you ask? Because 6.06 just flat out loves my laptop, it's lightning fast and rock solid!

BUT

I did like 7.04 and although it is listed as a beta at this time, it's pretty solid and IMHO can be used as a stand alone OS in it's current configuration.

Here is what I gathered from it in my one whole day of use...

It has new artwork (yawn)
It does in fact have a windows migration tool (I could not test it because I don't have windows) I assume it searched for files, videos, songs etc and will import them into Ubuntu... KEWL! Way, way kewl!!!

The new wireless system is a big improvement with 128 WEP ready to rock right after boot! Sweet!!!!

Next up, printing.... Same old story with my Canon..... Linux hates it!!!!

Boot up and shut down times were a bit faster, with the proper tweaking...

It has an option now in the System >> Administration menu to search for and install restricted drivers! SWEET!

I think Ubuntu is getting very, very close to a windows replacement right out of the box with 7.04..... Everything worked with NO configuration at all! Wifi, sound, mousepad.... Detected and loaded with zero issues....

Printing is still a slight no go but for novice windows users they still would not be able to get it working.....

I might just go out on a limb here and say Ubuntu 7.04 is the closest yet to a REAL alternate windows solution.....

YaST to not suck Wait until you see 10.3 and what is in the works for 10.4.

I use SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 with beta SP1 loaded on a Thinkpad T60p 64bit. Berry_Charger is built into the kernel 2.6.16.43-0.5-smp.

On the 8800, SLED mounts the media card with no issues. No only if it supported FLAC and OGG media.

I'm thinking of moving up to Fiesty Fawn from Edgy, but I want to make sure it's stable. Anyone have any issues?

Also, I just want to point out that Vista is a complete waste! I run it inside Ubuntu on a virtual drive and I now wonder why I wasted my time and drive space to even do so. I need to stay up to par with the technology, but damn if Vista isn't a step backwards!

7.04 was pretty solid on my laptop... I went a day with zero issues or errors.... I know it's a beta release but it already pretty darn stable in my opinion...

Found it:

Linux Headquarters - Kernel v2.6.21-rc5 /drivers/usb/misc/berry_charge.c

It's missing 8100/8800 support, I've fired off a note to the author. Thanks for the accidental heads up! This is great.
