Yes, I'll be waiting to hear how you did. I'm trying to buy one on ebay and since most are TMobile-locked, I need to know how to get it unlocked once I buy one, since I'm with a different carrier (TelCel in Mexico).

A few sellers have said it can easily be unlocked just by calling TMobile; don't know if that's true or not, since I'm not a customer of TMobile.

Let us know, sideshowjohn.
Thanks.

That's the address I've heard mentioned for this. I think I tried it once, but I don't remember it working. I personally just call 611 with my IMEI number handy and it takes about 5 minutes (to complete the call - the unlock code comes 24-48 hours after that).

The IMEI is the unique serial number assigned to each GSM handset on this planet. The PIN, BlackBerry-PIN, is the unique ID number assigned to each BlackBerry handheld. You can find both the IMEI and BlackBerry-PIN on a label underneath the battery. If the label is missing, than check Options->Status. There you will find both numbers, too.

The Pearl does not work on Nextel or Sprint. Or Verizon either.

I got my unlock code from tmobile and it didnt work. The tmobile rep only asked for my imei and didnt ask for the pin number. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I'm a little surprised that unlocking the pearl costs $55 bucks and some places higher! Is it because the Pearl is new or Blackberries are always more expensive to Unlock?

Very few places actually can unlock them. The price has dropped substantially as new unlockers have come up.

Currently both GSMphonesource and GSMliberty no longer seem to be offering the unlock. Does anybody know why this is or of any other place that can unlock the 8100. Thanks for the help

I have seen several ebay auctions for unlocking the 8100 go for $150. in the past few days;
I have no idea how many of these are legitimate and how many are scams, but they all seem to be from sellers with 100% feedback.

As for why several reliable sources are not doing it any more, I don't know but I can say this: I have seen two seperate 8100 sellers adding to their listing a warning or disclaimer or something, to the effect of "... we are having trouble with the unlock code, so this item is being sold as LOCKED to T-Mobile." This was added to listings already active and advertising themselves as UNLOCKED phones.
Seems there's something going wrong with the unlock process or something.
Also, I had one seller (who was listing a TMobile-locked 8100) send me a reply to my question of whether he could send it unlocked if I was the high bidder, respond with "This phone is locked tmobile and if you unlock it you would face some software problems ." I guess he meant the programming, instead of "software".

so ........... take that for what it's worth.

(p.s. as you may guess, I am shopping for an 8100, unlocked, and have read & tracked ALL the ebay listings over the past two weeks or so; the price, for locked or unlocked, seems to be going up this week in comparison to last week. I am kicking myself for not having jumped on a couple of the listings that ended last week: $330 to $350 for unlocked unit, from reputable sellers. There are actually some on ebay now for $500 !!)

My guess is that the bulk of these unlocking services use an inside source to get the unlock codes and with the whole HP scandal and privacy issues with cell phones that they are now harder to get.

I've heard that Bongo Wireless in Canada has also had some issues with getting the unlock codes for T Mobile branded 8100's and that the people who paid for the unlock codes were refunded.

It sounds like it's unlocked but not reading the SIM correctly. If your SIM works on other phone then it's weird.

If it's locked you would not even get that far. I inserted my Cingular SIM before on a locked 8100 and it was getting stuck at "time" settings when I power on the phone.

GSM PhoneSource (Adam) unlocked it my 8100 in 1 day!

Regards,
Robert
