Notes supports this just fine and as matter of fact is something I routinely do and consult my customers to do. The data directory should be in its own path either a new partition or separate drive altogether. Notes does not care where it resides, as long as the notes.ini points to it. If you have an OS issue, then you can always reinstall Notes saving your data as it is in a separate partition or device.
RIM has a release of DM (patched) that works with Notes 8. Yes, they just needed the look at the new keys that point to the Notes 8 'classic' program location (where the .ini resides). I have been testing this and it works as expected, I have no clue as to what RIM will do with it, but I would assume it will be posted shortly.
