HI,
This is my first post on this forum.
I don't have a Blackberry, but am thinking about getting an unlocked model.
I currently live in Japan and use a Nokia 3G smartphone from Softbank. It's pretty close to crapping out, and the carrier (Softbank) doesn't offer any phones that i would want to replace it with (ie, other Nokias or Blackberies).
I just want to use voice, SMS and email, which i currently use on my nokia.
Does anyone know what functionality i would get from a BB if i just put in my Softbank SIM card? or which models it would work with?
anyone had an experience with this?

Best advice for Japan is get a Japanese phone - one that is made for the Japanese network which you use. Non-Japanese devices do not have a good track record of giving acceptable service. They use different frequencies from the rest of the world.

You might try a search and see which models have been identified as working.

However, if you live there, buy the Japanese device. Less headaches and it should work as advertised.

8707g works. And NTT DoCoMo has a Bold they're currently offering, so that must work.
