Default Missing Cingular and BIS browsers - IT Policy?

Please Login to Remove!

Recently got an 8700c and it's working great. Wow the Blackberry has come a long way...I remember using the RIM 950 pager a few years back!

Anyway, I can't seem to see the Cingular WAP or the BIS browser on my homescreen no matter what theme I use. I checked the service books and it seems like all the right service books are there.

I have a suspicion that this is a result of the IT Policy which restricts 3rd-party apps. I just wouldn't have considered the WAP and BIS browser 3rd-party apps.

Just wanted to confirm that it in fact was the IT Policy that was hiding/disabling the WAP/BIS browsers and not something else I was/wasn't doing.

Thanks.

P.S. The ITPolicy says "Default + Disalow 3rd-party apps" (Someone can't spell!)

Did you try resending the service books? If that doesn't work I would imagine that it would be an IT policy issue then.

Did you check the APP loader in the desktop manager? see if the browsers were checked and loaded during the upgrade. you may try adding them if not.

More than likely it's the IT policy restricting browsing to the BB browser, which goes through the BES. You may also find it impossible to use BIS e-mail. Pretty standard policy.

After re-reading his message, It looks like he got a new unit not upgraded his software so I agree, your company must be blocking browers. Unless they think the people in your company should not access the internet, there is no reason to do a block

The only browser I have is the BES Browser which works fine but because I don't have the BIS browser I can't use things like the Push services, etc.

Don't really care too much about the Cingular WAP browser.

i would still go back to the IT guys and check to see if they blocked the other browsers. If not , then look at the loaded software via the Desktop manager.

Problem is I work in a ginormous organization and there really isn't a thing as the IT guys. There's a Blackberry group and I need to open a ticket or something just to ask them which is a royal pain in the ass.

I'll just make do...was hoping they was a way for me to find out myself.

if you have blackberry browser and not the internet or cingular browser, it is 99.9% a it policy. some companies do this for auditing purposes.

I disagree. There are a lot of good reasons to block access not through the BES. Auditing is the first one that comes to mind. Security, liability, cost control.

Well ok security i will give you but not cost control. Once the network is working and has internet access where does cost control come in or is it more control. Liability can be delt with by employee usage policy that is enforced.

Liability can only truly be enforced by making sure that no inapropriate sutes are visited and that can only be accomplished by forcing all browsing through the corporate filters.

As for cost control, not everybody has unlimited data and data roaming is expensive. If additional charges are incurred, the compny will want to verify that it was for legimate business use.

Well i guess your right in the cases you mention. Fortunatly i work for a very large company ( 240k ) and they have very few BB the company owns ( less than 200 ) and all have service thats unlimited. We do have a policy about the sites visited and if caught it 's your job so problem solved here anyway.
